History:
Katoch dynasty king Maharaja Sushrma Chandra built Kangra fort 3500 years ago. According to history, Maharaja Sushant Sharma built this fort after he lost the battle of Kurukshetra with Kauravas from Mahabharata’s epic.

Many believe treasures are stored here. It is a major target for all rulers. Many foreign and local rulers attempted to infiltrate the fort.

In 470AD, Kashmir Raja Shrestha was the first to attack. He was followed by Mahmud Ghazni, a foreign ruler, in 1009 AD. The fort was subsequently seized by the Turkish Sultan Muhammad Bin Thuglaq, and his successor Firoz Shah Tughlaq. After 52 unsuccessful attempts, Akbar attempted to take the fort from the Sultans in 1615. His son Jahangir finally took it over in 1620.

 

Sansar Chand defeated Saif Ali Khan, the ruler of Kangra fort. He strengthened his forces after his grandfather was elected governor of Jalandhar in 1758 by Ahmed Shah Abdali. Ghurka troops invade Kangra fort again, and finally, it fell under British control after many Sikh wars.

It is stunning throughout the year. The fort is open all year. However, if you take into account the weather, it’s best to visit between June and September.
