History

The temple was constructed during the reign of the Cholas and then restored by the King from the Vijayanagara Empire. The father of Vysadeva and the writer of the Vishnu Purana, Parasara Muni has been blessed by the Lord Shiva with an image of Vishwa Nritya Mukti Tandavam (the Nataraja Sabha is known as Mukti Mandapam and Siva Tandavam). A fascinating aspect of this shrine is the fact that oil poured in abhishekam is absorbed by the god. Shukru does not have a particular spot as Lord Shiva himself is incarnated in the form of Shukra (Venus).

There is a belief that Lord Brahma was present at the wedding of Shiva and Parvati in this temple.

Architecture

The temple is a five-tiered Rajagopuram and two ramparts around it, which are adorned with inscriptions from The Chola as well as the Vijayanagara empires. A stone representation of Haradatta Sivacharya, Nataraja, and Sivakami from Vaishnava origin is located in this. The Temple of Agniswarar and goddess Karpangambigai is located east and features a 16-foot mandapam, five mandapams ceremony, mukti, vahana, Malankara, and three preparations.

Religious significance

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva for being one of the planet’s gods, Venus, giving it extra religious significance. The Mukti Tandavam ritual that is performed during the Nataraja Sabha also gives this temple an extra religious significance.
