The temple was constructed during the reign of the Cholas and then restored by the King from the Vijayanagara Empire. The father of Vysadeva and the writer of the Vishnu Purana, Parasara Muni has been blessed by the Lord Shiva with an image of Vishwa Nritya Mukti Tandavam (the Nataraja Sabha is known as Mukti Mandapam and Siva Tandavam).
