A Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code that is assigned to every taxpayer in India. It is mandatory for individuals and entities that pay taxes in India to have a PAN card. If you have lost your PAN card, you can apply for a new one by following the steps mentioned below.

Step 1: Visit the official website of the Income Tax Department of India

The first step to apply for a lost PAN card is to visit the official website of the Income Tax Department of India. You can access the website at https://www.incometax.gov.in/.

Step 2: Click on the ‘Apply for PAN’ option

Once you are on the Income Tax Department website, click on the ‘Services’ tab on the top of the page. Under this tab, you will find an option called ‘Apply for PAN’. Click on this option.

Step 3: Select the appropriate form

On the next page, you will find two options – ‘New PAN Card (Form 49A)’ and ‘New PAN Card (Form 49AA)’. Select the appropriate form based on your citizenship status. If you are an Indian citizen, select ‘New PAN Card (Form 49A)’.

Step 4: Fill in the required details

On the next page, you will be required to fill in the necessary details such as your name, date of birth, gender, address, email ID, and mobile number. Make sure you enter accurate details as they will be verified during the application process.

Step 5: Upload the required documents

After filling in the necessary details, you will be asked to upload the required documents. These documents include proof of identity, address, and date of birth. You can use documents such as Aadhaar card, driving license, passport, or voter ID card as proof of identity, and documents such as electricity bill, telephone bill, or bank statement as proof of address. You can use your birth certificate or school leaving certificate as proof of date of birth.

Step 6: Pay the fee

After uploading the required documents, you will be directed to the payment page. The fee for applying for a PAN card is Rs. 115 for Indian citizens and Rs. 1,020 for foreign citizens. You can pay the fee using net banking, debit card, credit card, or demand draft.

Step 7: Submit the application

After paying the fee, submit the application. You will receive an acknowledgement receipt with a 15-digit acknowledgement number. You can use this number to track the status of your application.

Step 8: Receive the PAN card

Once your application is processed, your PAN card will be dispatched to the address mentioned in the application form. It usually takes 15-20 days to receive the PAN card.

In case you want to apply for a reprint of your PAN card, you need to select the ‘Reprint of PAN Card’ option instead of ‘New PAN Card (Form 49A)’ option in step 3.
