Attukal Bhagavathy Temple History:

This temple’s history has an interesting backstory. Kannagi, a passionate follower of Goddess Bhagavathyy, can be found at the story’s center. Kannagi met Attukal while on a trip to Kodungallur.

She encountered the Killi river when she arrived at Attukal. Kannagi spotted an elderly man performing religious rituals along the riverbanks, as she tried to figure out how to cross it.

This man was the head of the Mulluveetil clan, which was one of the most powerful families in the city. Kannagi believed he could help her so she disguised herself as a child to ask the older man for assistance in crossing the river.

Kannagi appeared in Karanavar’s dreams that night, asking that he build her a house in the Kavu (or nearby grove), as they called it.

He was told by her that he could find three gold lines on the spot where she wanted to build her house. He was astonished to find the gold lines exactly where she pointed them!

This sacred endeavor was started quickly by the Karanavar. He completed the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in a very short time.
