Biography of Acharya Narendra Dev

Narendra Dev, a prominent Indian freedom fighter, was a literary man, socialist thinker, and educator. Narendra Dev is well-known in Hindi, Sanskrit, and Persian as well as English. He was also incarcerated several times during the freedom struggle. Acharya Narendra dev was endowed with a unique talent and personality and was a dedicated teacher and great educator. After he was made an Acharya at Varanasi’s Kashi Vidyapeeth, the title “Acharya” became an integral part of his name. He was passionate about the nation’s independence and he became a part of the freedom movement. He was an active member of the Indian National Congress and was also a member of the All India Congress Committee between 1916 and 1948.

Narendra Dev was born in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh on October 31, 1889. His childhood name was Avinashilal. Baldev Prasad, his father, was a prominent lawyer at the time. Bala Avinashi grew up in Faizabad. Baldev Prasad was a religious man and showed some interest in politics. People from these areas used to visit his house. Bala Narendra Dev was able to meet Swami Ramatirtha and Pandit Madanmohan Malaviya as well as Pandit Deenadayalu Sharma. Gradually, his love for Indian culture developed and, as he grew older the political and social conditions in India compelled him to become a politician.

Narendra Dev graduated from Allahabad University with a Bachelor of Arts. To study archaeology, he went to Queen’s College in Kashi. He then completed his MA in Sanskrit, in 1913.

Politics

Slowly, Narendra Dev Ji began to align his political views with those of the Garam Dala. He stayed away from Congress meetings due to his radical ideology and being a member of a popular party. After the reconciliation between the Congress’ two parties, he returned to Congress in 1916.

After completing his law studies, he worked in Faizabad for five years (1915-20). After the British government started to resist him, Narendra Dev quit his practice and moved to Kashi Vidyapeeth, where he began teaching. This is where Dr. Bhagwan Dieu began the work at Vidyapeetha. In 1926, he was also made Vice-Chancellor of Vidya Peetha. He also held the title Acharya. Under Narendra Dev’s leadership, the teachers and students at Kashi Vidyapeeth contributed greatly to the freedom struggle.

Narendra Dev began his interest in politics as a student. From 1916 to 1948, he was a member of the ‘All India Congress Committee and was active in the ‘Congress Working Committee with Jawaharlal Nehru.

Despite his illness, Narendra Dev was a participant in the Salt Satyagraha, Civil Disobedience Movement (1932), and Personal Satyagraha Movement (1941). He also suffered torture in prison. He was also arrested with the Congress Working Committee of Bombay during the 1942 ‘Quit India” movement, where Gandhi suggested “do or die” on August 8. From 1942 to 1945, Narendra dev stayed in Ahmednagar Fort with Jawaharlal Nehru. Pandit Nehru, impressed by his knowledge, and here that Narendra Dev edited the manuscript of his acclaimed book “Discovery of India”

He formed the Congress Socialist Party in 1934 along with Jayaprakash Narendra Narayan and Ram Manohar Lohia and was also President of the first conference. His goal was to lead the Congress towards socialist ideas. He and his colleagues left Congress party when the Congress party decided there would not be another party in it. Acharya Narendra dev held a prominent place in India’s socialist movement.

Language proficiency

Narendra Dev was a great thinker and political activist. He is fluent in Hindi, Sanskrit, English, Urdu, Bangla, French, and Prakrit languages. He was also the Vice-Chancellor of Lucknow University and ‘Kashi Indian University and made many contributions to the field of education.

Compositions

Acharya Narendradev Ji once said in a radio talk entitled “Mere Sammaran”, “I have always had both tendencies in my lifetime – one for education, the other for politics!”

He was particularly interested in Buddhism and continued to study it throughout his life. In the last days of his life, he completed “Buddha-Dharma-Darshan” and also published “Abhidharmakosh”. Along with this the Hindi translation of “Abhidhammatthasamho” was done. His sudden death meant that he could not complete the construction of a glossary on Buddhist philosophy.

His speeches are an important part of the works published in Acharya Narendra dev’s books.

Death

Acharya Narendra dev was an asthmatic throughout his entire life. He went to Chennai to recover at the request of Sriprakash (then Madras Governor), and he died in Ador on 19 February 1956 from asthma. At the time of his death, he was 67 years.
