Kanjeevaram Natarajan Annadurai or C.N. Annadurai is an Indian politician and Chief Minister of the state of Tamil Nadu. The politician was known as a leading politician within Tamil Nadu, the first non-Congress Chief Minister, and the first founder of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam political party. His influence on Tamil Nadu politics is good. The Tamil Nadu people used to refer to Annadurai as ‘Anna’, which translates to ‘Anna’. reverence.

C.N. Annadurai was born September 15, 1909, in Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu to a family of the lower middle class. He was the son of Nataraja Mudaliar a weaver and his mother was a temple attendant. He was raised through his older twin sister Rajamani Ammal. He went to Pachaiyappa Secondary School. He dropped out of his studies halfway through and started work as a clerk at an office of a corporation to help their family’s financial needs. He was married at 21. Because they did not have family members, the children of Rajamani were adopted and reared.

He graduation was from Pachaiyappa College, Chennai in 1934. In the following year, he pursued his post-graduation studies with a degree in Economics as well as Political Science at the college. In the following years, he worked in the role of an English teacher at Pachaiyappa High school. Following that, he quit the position of teacher and turned his attention to the field of journalism and politics.

He joined the Justice Party in 1935 due to his political interest. It was founded in 1935. Justice Party was founded in 1917 by the non-Brahmin elite. In 1917, the Justice Party started as the Madras United League, which was formed to provide accommodation assistance for non-Brahmin students in Madras. In the course of time, the organization was established by CN Mudaliar and the late Sir PT Chetty and Dr. T.M. It was transformed into a political party thanks to the assistance of Nair.

 

It was the Justice Party was in power during the Madras Presidency from 1920 to 1937. Periyar E. when Annadurai joined the party. V. Ramaswamy is its President. Annadurai was co-editor of Justice magazine. In the following years, he was the director of Viduthalai magazine. Later, he was also involved with the Tamil weekly Kudi Arasu. The magazine was also founded by him named ‘Dravida Nadu’. In 1944, Periyar changed the name of the Justice Party to ‘Dravida Kazhagam’.

It was believed that the Indian National Congress was mainly led by Brahmins who fought against the British government to gain the independence of the nation. Periyar believed that, after independence South India would come under the supervision of Brahmins as well as North Indians, hence he celebrated 15 August 1947 as a Day of mourning. Annadurai was against Periyar’s notion due to the fact that there were differences between the two.

 

Annadurai was also against Periyar’s decision to not participate in elections that were democratic. In the midst of all this, Periyar was married to Maniammai who was forty years older than him, and the differences between them intensified. Following this, he split from Periyar and founded a new political group called Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Demand for Dravidian Nadu

Since the time of Dravida Kazhagam, Annadurai has been supporting the idea of a separate nation, dubbed Dravida Nadu. Annadurai also emphasized this idea within his newly formed party and demanded Dravid Nadu however, first he wanted to split his Madras Presidency into new states according to linguistics, and later to alter the Indian Constitution following the Sino-Indian War. This rendered it ineffective. Following the constitutional amendment, D.M.K. and Annadurai ended the call for an independent Dravidian nation.

 

Anti-Hindi movement

South Indian politicians have always in the past fought Hindi as the nation’s official language. Before independence, every time there was a debate about the teaching of Hindi as a language that was compulsory the public and politicians opposed the idea. Then, in 1950 the nation’s constitution was enacted and 15 years later in 1965 it was decided to grant Hindi its status as a ‘National Language’. This has caused a lot of concern with regard to the common population and students in particular within Tamil Nadu along with southern states.

 

Annadurai was also adamantly opposed to the issue and accelerated the anti-Hindi protests across the entire Madras Presidency and some other areas that are part of the South. His party held an official Day of mourning on the 24th of January 1965, and also organized protests. The protests slowly turned violent, and the violence escalated. As the violence grew, Anna appealed to the citizens to end the protest but certain leaders, like Karunanidhi, kept it going which was a huge benefit to the DMK. The movement was a result of the 1967 election.

Death

C.N. Annadurai was killed on the 3rd of February 1969, in Chennai. He was diagnosed with cancer. It was diagnosed in America prior to his death but the treatment was not successful. The politician who caused controversy in the political scene in Tamil Nadu and the country and was able to stay as Chief Minister for only two years.
