Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin (1809 – 1882) was an English Natural scientist who developed an outline to support the concept of evolutionary theory that explains the process by which Man evolved from earlier forms. In the early days, his research and publications caused some controversy, however, his theory of natural selection and evolution eventually gained acceptance among scientists.

Charles Darwin was born on 12 February 1809 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Darwin was born to a rich and powerful family. His grandparents included China manufacturer Josiah Wedgwood, and Erasmus Darwin, who was one of the most influential intellectuals of the 18th century in England.

Darwin was planning to study field medicine at Edinburgh University, but later at the suggestion of his father, he changed to study theology at Christ’s College, Cambridge University. Darwin wasn’t a very good student, preferring to spend his time outdoors and enjoying the great outdoors; Darwin spent a great deal of time studying natural science and beetle collection. After acquiring a passion for the field of natural science, Darwin was offered a spot in the HMS Beagle to act as an expert in natural science while on a cruise toward the shores of South America.

In the past when religion was prevalent, it was a significant influence in society. majority of people believed that to believe that the Bible was the only infallible and the literal words of God. It was believed in the belief that God created the universe in seven days and that the universe was about a thousand years old. But, as he traveled, Darwin increasingly began to observe evidence that life was more advanced. Particularly, Lyell’s “Principles of Geology stated that fossils could be evidence of animals who lived thousands of years ago.

On the trip, Darwin made copious notes regarding the specimens he saw during his journeys. Particularly, when he was in the Galapagos Islands, which are located 500 miles to the west of South America, Darwin was amazed by how the Finch differed on each of the islands. Darwin noticed that the Finch seemed to have adjusted to the different aspects of the specific island.

In the following twenty years, Darwin was able to solve the question of how species change and may end up being completely different across various islands. In the works by Thomas Malthus, Darwin came up with the concept that natural selection is the basis for the gradual development in the course of a.

“In the struggle for survival, the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in adapting themselves best to their environment.”

Darwin continued to refine his theories, and would also breed extensively plants to develop his theories. But, after recognizing the extent to which his theories were controversial, Darwin delayed publishing them. It wasn’t until he learned the existence of another naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace had made similar discoveries that Darwin was compelled to publish a book.

in 1859 the groundbreaking ‘ On the Origin of Species through the Means of Natural Selection was released. The book immediately sparked curiosity and attention resulting in a heated debate over the assertion that the human race was a descendant of animals such as the Ape.

“Owing to this struggle for life, any variation, however slight and from whatever cause proceeding, if it is in any degree profitable to an individual of any species, in its infinitely complex relationship to other organic beings and external nature, will tend to the preservation of that individual, and will generally be inherited by its offspring.”

– Charles Darwin, Origin of Species (1859)

But, by the time his death on the 19th of April, 1882 his views were becoming more accepted – at a minimum by the non-religious and scientific society. He was buried at a state funeral in Westminster Abbey.

Darwin’s Religious Beliefs

Darwin was raised as a member of The Church of England, and at one time was educated to become an Anglican priest. As with many people of his time Darwin believed in his Bible as the Word of God and frequently cited it as a source of moral authority. But, following his epic journey through South America, he became skeptical of his faith in the Bible for its role as the source of the past; he also believed there was no reason that any religion can’t be legitimate.

From 1849 onward, he stopped attending church, although the man never believed that he was an atheist. He believed that the term “agnostic” fit his beliefs better. In his autobiography, he wrote that he ultimately renounced Christianity since he did not agree with the idea that believers will have eternal hell.

“I can indeed hardly see how anyone ought to wish Christianity to be true; for if so the plain language of the text seems to show that the men who do not believe, and this would include my Father, Brother, and almost all my best friends, will be everlastingly punished.”

He was a liberal politician and opposed slavery. He witnessed the brutality of how slave owners treated slaves in the Spanish colony.

“I have observed how consistently the public sentiment in the country, as expressed during elections, is increasing against Slavery. What a wonderful thing to do for England to be one of the very first European nations to completely abolish slavery!”
