Career/Profession/Position: Founder, Apollo Hospitals Group

Doctor. Pratap Reddy is the creator of Apollo Hospitals, India’s first corporate hospital group. He is a doctor by trade. He revolutionized healthcare in India. He inspired many people with his ideas that led to more than 750 hospitals run by corporates in India to the present.

Dr. Pratap C Reddy received a medical doctorate from Stanley Medical College, Chennai, and was later certified as a cardiologist in the UK and in the United States. He completed his fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, and also headed various research projects within the Missouri State Chest Hospital, USA before returning to India in the year 1978.

Dr. Reddy came back to India after his time as the Chief Resident of Worcester City Hospital, US. After his return, he began doing small-scale surgery within the town of Madras. Dr. Reddy came up with the idea to establish an organization called the Apollo Hospitals Group when a patient was unable to get to Texas to undergo an open heart operation. The incident led Dr. Reddy to open a world-class hospital in India itself. Dr. Reddy would like to construct the hospital in a way that is accessible to the common man.

Doctor. Pratap Reddy’s dream came into reality in 1983 when the Apollo Hospitals Group set up its first hospital in Chennai. It was a small hospital with 150 beds and growing to a 150-bed hospital, the Apollo Hospitals Group has consistently maintained its top position in the field of medical innovations, clinical services, and cutting-edge research. It has performed extremely well. Apollo Hospitals Group is one of the biggest hospital clusters in the world, comprising around 50 hospitals in various locations across India that have 8500 beds and 4000 trained doctors, and 65,000 professionals. Honors and Awards

Dr. Pratap C. Reddy was given the Padma Bhushan in 1991 for his contributions to the growth of the private healthcare industry and his participation in numerous regulatory changes relating to import restrictions, licensing and transplantation of organs within the healthcare industry.

He was also awarded the Mother Teresa “Citizen of the Year” award.

The award was presented the pioneering work in the field of health by the Harvard School of Publications

Received ‘Asia Pacific Bio Business Leadership Award’ by the University of Southern California

In March of 2010, the Government of India Dr. Pratap C. Reddy was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian award.
