Ernakulam Manakkal Sankaran Namboodripad, a communist leader, was the first Chief Minister of Kerala. He was the first Chief Minister of any Indian state to be elected by the people without being a member of Congress. He was a key figure in the country’s freedom struggle and was often sent to prison. He is remembered as one of the key leaders in the country’s independence.

His leadership saw the Communist Party of Kerala come to power for the first time during the 1957 assembly elections. He was the chief minister and brought major changes to education and land ownership. He also fought against Kerala’s caste system. E.M.S. was established to address this issue. His name is still etched in the pages of Indian political history and his contributions to the country are well-remembered.

The first step is life

Elankulam Manakkal Sankaran, or E. M. S. Namboodripad, was born in Malappuram (Kerala) on 13 June 1909. He was born to a Namboodri Brahmin family of the upper caste. He was born in Elankulam Parinthalmanthulak, present Malappuram. He was influenced early on by VT Bhattathiripad, MR Bhattathiripad as well as others who fought against the caste system in Nambudri society and orthodoxy. He was active in the Indian freedom movement and joined the Indian National Congress during college.

In 1931, he left EMS College and joined the Indian freedom struggle. During the Satyagraha movement, he was also sent to prison. He was elected the All India Joint Secretary to the Congress Samajwadi Party in 1934. Namboodripad was first exposed to Marx’s ideas during this period. He formed the Kerala Communist Party’s founding group in 1936 with five other members. He laid the foundations for a strong anti-feudal, anti-imperialist movement within Kerala. He was a crucial part of the unification of Kerala as a linguistic country.

EMS was elected to Madras Provincial Assembly in 1939. In 1941, he was included in the Central Committee of the Communist Party of India. He was elected in 1950 as a member of the CPI Politburo. In 1952, he was elected to the Secretariat. After the creation of Kerala, the first elections in the state were won by the Communist Party. The election victory made EMS the state’s chief minister. From 1957 to 1959, he remained in the chair until he was wrongly dismissed.

 

He was then appointed General Secretary to the United CPI in 1962. Later, he joined the Central Committee and CPI M Politburo of 1964. Namboodripad was elected Chief Minister again in 1967, and he remained in power until 1969. He was elected the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India in 1977. He is also an accomplished journalist, having written many books about his experiences and thoughts that are of use to the people in Kerala. His books, which are available in English and Malayalam, were published by Chinta Prakashan under the title “EMS Santri”.

EMS was taken to the next universe on March 19, 1998. He was then 89 years of age.
