Ghanshyamdas Birla is an eminent Indian industrialist and the founder of his own Birla Group. Birla Group is a prominent Indian industrialist. B. M. Birla Group was founded by him and has assets worth approximately the amount of Rs. More than 200 billion. His contribution to the struggle for freedom was unimaginable. In the course of the freedom struggle, capitalists were urged to help the national cause and help consolidate the Congress. Ghanshyam Das was a supporter of the civil disobedience movement. He also offered financial assistance to the national cause on a number of occasions.
Additionally the social injustices, and in 1932 became head of the Harijan Sevak Sangh under Gandhiji’s direction. He was a close mentor, friend, and close associate to Mahatma Gandhi. The primary business of the Birla Group which he created encompasses various sectors, including textiles and viscose filament yarns cement, chemicals fertilizers, power telecom, financial services, telecommunications, and aluminum. He was presented with the Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India in 1957 in recognition of his outstanding services to the nation. Ghanshyamdas Birla was born March 10, 1894, in the Marwari family from Pilani village in Rajasthan. His father Shiv Narayan Birla established a business in a variety of areas, away from the traditional job of ‘Sahukari’ or Tanaka” of the Marwari community. The father of Ghanshyamdas, Baldevdas (who is an adopted child of Nawalgarh Birla’s family) Nawalgarh Birla family) earned money from the opium industry together with the niece Phoolchand Sodhani. Ghanshyamadas’ younger brother Jugal Kishore, too, established himself in the opium business.
The year 1905 was the time that Ghanshyamadas married 1905 Durga Devi. Durga Devi was the daughter of Mahadev Somani who lived in Chirava village, which was located near Pilani. Similar to other members of the Birla family Ghanshyam Das’s father-in-law Mahadev Somani was also a frequent visitor to Kolkata to conduct business. In 1909 the Goddess Durga had a baby son who was named Lakshmi Nivas. In the same year, Durga Devi T.B. died from this illness around the time of 1910. The year 1912 was the time Ghanshyam Das Birla established an agency for a brokerage with the assistance of his father-in-law M. Somani.
Ghanshyamdas remarried Maheshwari Devi in 1912. In 1912, the Birlas have five sons from the marriage (two sons of Krishna Kumar and Basant Kumar and three daughters namely Anasuya Devi Tauria and Shanti Devi Maheshwari). Tragically, Maheshwari Devi also got tuberculosis. Ghanshyamadas took all his children, including his wife, his wife to Solan located in Himachal Pradesh for health reasons under the supervision of a private physician, however, Maheshwari Devi was not able to survive and died on 6 January 1926. Even though Ghanshyamdas was aged 32 at the time, he did not get married again and gave the four kids to his younger brother Brij Mohan Birla and two daughters to his older brother Rameshwar Birla.

Industry and trade expansion
Ghanshyamadas acquired the business of his parents and expanded the business into different sectors. He wanted to change the traditional money-hunting business into construction so he relocated to Kolkata. He set up a jute business in the city as Bengal was the biggest producer of Jute. The well-established European as well as British merchants were frightened about Ghanshyam Das and attempted to end his venture by unsavory methods, but Ghanshyam Das was steadfast and tenacious. The business of Birla flourished at its peak during the First World War when the entire British Empire was in need of supplies.
The company was founded as ‘Birla Brothers Limited” in 1919, with a capital of 50 lakhs. They also established a mill in Gwalior that same year.
In 1926 the year 1926, he became a member of his seat in the Central Legislative Assembly of British India. In 1932, he started in 1932 Harijan Sevak Sangh in Delhi alongside Mahatma Gandhi.
He was a pioneer in the 40s when he created “Hindustan Motors” and subsequently began to enter automobile manufacturing. After independence, Ghanshyam Das Birla invested in the textile and tea industry through the acquisition of various ex-European companies. The company was expanded into areas like chemicals, cement rayon, and steel pipes. In the Quit India movement, Ghanshyam Das came up with the idea of establishing an Indian commercial bank that had Indian funds and management. This is how United Commercial Bank was established in Kolkata in 1943. It is among the oldest banks that offer commercial banking in India and is today UCO Bank.
Charitable work
in 1943 Ghanshyam Das Birla established the Birla Engineering College located in Pilani (renamed the Birla Institute for Technology and Science in 1964) and the ‘Technological Institute of Fabric and Sciences in Bhiwani. Both of these institutions fall into the category of the top engineering institutions in India. Pilani is a part of the Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute’ an institution for residential students (named in honor of its patron, the Birla family) as well as several polytechnic colleges. Yes. The D Birla Memorial School in Ranikhet (one of the top residential schools in India) was also founded in his honor.
In 1957, the Government of India honored him with India’s highest award, ‘Padma Vibhushan’.
Mahatma Gandhi as well as Ghanshyam Das Birla
Ghanshyam Das Birla was an intimate associate and mentor to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. He also actively was a part of the movement for freedom. He was a friend of Mahatma Gandhi’s first meeting in the year 1916. At the time that Bapu was killed He was in Birla’s Delhi residence and was staying there for the last four months.
In a number of occasions the entrepreneur helped raise money to support the independence movement. He also called on other capitalists to join the national cause.
