Gulzarilal Nanda was an Indian politician and scholar who was a master of labor-related issues. Gulzari Lal Nanda was always dedicated to his image of cleanliness as well as his party, the Congress Party, was the interim Premier of India twice, one time following the passing of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964. Gulzari Lal Nada was born 4 July, 1898. He was born in Sialkot (now West Pakistan). He was the son of Blake Ram Nanda, and his mom was named Mrs. Ishwar Devinanda. After completing his primary education in Sialkot, Nanda attended Foreman Christian College in Lahore as well as Allahabad University. He also attended studies with Allahabad University in Agra as well as Amritsar. He completed a Master’s in Arts and earned a Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B) degree.


He studied ‘Labour Problems at Allahabad University and was appointed Professor of Economics at the National College of Bombay in 1921. Wed with Lakshmi Devi in 1916. He was a part of the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1921 and was elected Secretary of the Ahmedabad Textile Mazdoor Union in 1922. This position he was in until 1946.

 Public and political life

Gulzari Lal Nanda was a participant as a participant in his participating in the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1921. In the following year of his arrest, he was jailed in 1932 because of his involvement in the Satyagraha protests. He was again arrested in 1942, during the Quit India Movement, and was imprisoned until 1944.

He was elected to the Bombay Legislative Assembly in 1937 He was the Ministerial Secretary (Labour and Excise) to the Government of Bombay between 1937 and 1939. As the Minister for Labor in the Bombay Government, he successfully adopted the ‘Labour Disputations Bill’. He was also Secretary of the Hindustan Mazdoor Sevak Sangh as well as the President of the Bombay Housing Board.

Additionally, he is a part of also a member of the National Planning Commission. He was a key player in the creation of the Indian National Trade Union Congress and later served as president.

It was in 1947 when Nanda received the honor of being an official of the government in Switzerland to take part in the “International Labor Conference”. He traveled to Sweden, France, Switzerland, Belgium, and the United Kingdom to study the subject of labor and housing.

In 1950, Nanda was elected 1950 as Vice-President of the Planning Commission and in 1951 Nanda was promoted to the position of Planning Minister within the Union Government. He also was entrusted with the responsibility of the department of energy and irrigation. In 1952, he was elected as a member of the Lok Sabha from Bombay 1952, he was again in the charge of his department, the Ministry of Planning, Irrigation, and Energy at the Centre.

Nanda was elected in his seat in the 2005 Lok Sabha elections once again and became the Union Minister for Labour, Employment, and Planning. Then Nanda was appointed the Vice chairman of the Planning Commission.

The candidate was elected in Sabarkanta at the time of the 1962 Lok Sabha elections and was the Union Minister for Labor and Employment in 1962-63 as well as Union home Minister from 1963 until 1966.

Gulzari Lal Nanda was appointed caretaker prime minister of India twice in 13 days! He was appointed as the caretaker prime minister first time following the death of prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the year 1964. He was appointed in the second instance following the passing of Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1966.
