Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was born on 23rd March 1953, in Bangalore (Karnataka). She graduated from school in the year 1968 at Bishop Cotton Girls High School, Bangalore. He earned his B.Sc (Zoology Honours) qualification at Bangalore University in the year 1973. Following this, he went on to pursue advanced studies in “Malting and Brewing from Ballarat College, University of Melbourne (Australia) in 1975. In this period, he was employed in the role of an apprentice maltster for Melbourne’s Carlton as well as United Breweries, Brewer, Barrett Brothers, and Burston. He also served as a Technical Consultant for Jupiter Breweries Limited, Kolkata for a short time, and later as Technical Manager at the Standard Malting Corporation of Baroda between 1975 and 1977.
In 1998 at the age of 45, she was married to John-Shaw who is a Scottish native and is currently vice president of Biocon Limited.

In 2004 he decided to establish ‘Biocon Limited’s research and development programs to be able to access an investor market. Biocon’s IPO was oversubscribed 32 times and closed on the very initial day having a value of $1.11 billion. This makes Biocon Ltd. only the second business in India to surpass one billion dollars on the first day of its listing.

At present, 62-year-old Kiran is the Director and Chairman of Biocon Limited. Additionally, she is also the president of IIM Bangalore.
He was presented with the ‘Othmer Gold Medal 2014 in Philadelphia (USA) in recognition of his exceptional contributions to Science and Chemistry. The third and the first Indian woman to receive the ‘Othmer gold medal’. Forbes magazine put her in the 92nd position among the most powerful women in 2014.
In the 2007/08 timeframe, Madrid News, a prominent US trade publication was ranked by Biocon as the 20th largest biotechnology firm globally and the seventh largest employer worldwide.
He was also awarded the famous Padma Shri (1989) and Padma Bhushan (2005) awards by the Government of India for his innovative work. He founded the Biocon Foundation to run sanitation, health, education, and environmental programs that benefit those in the most vulnerable and poor groups of society. Through the foundation’s ‘Micro Health Insurance’ program, more than 70,000 rural residents are enrolled.
