Biography of Lal Krishna Advani

Political and career life

LK Advani began his teaching career. He taught science, mathematics, and English at Karachi’s Model High School. When he was elected secretary of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, his political journey began. He was elected to the Bharatiya Jan Sangh a few years later. He was able to assume the presidency after completing many tasks. The Jana Sangh became closer to other political parties during this period and the Janata Party was created.

Janata Party was formed because of the unpopularity of the Emergency government under former Prime Minister Indira Singh. Advani was given the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in this government. The Janata Party government was unable to function for very long due to internal strife, lack of unity and lack thereof. This was the birth of the Bharatiya Janata Party, and LK Advani was a key member of this party. LK Advani represented Bharatiya Janata Party at the Rajya Sabha.

1986 saw LK Advani become the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Advani provided a fresh direction for the BJP, adopting an aggressive Hindutva strategy. The BJP slowly gained ground with the masses. The BJP won 89 seats in the 1989 elections and gained outside support to form the government. The BJP pulled support from the government after Advani was detained in Bihar in 1991 during the Rath Yatra. This prevented the National Front government’s term from being completed and allowed Congress to return to power in the following Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP, led by Advani, was in opposition from 1991 to 1996. It emerged as the largest party in the 1996 elections. However, his government lasted just 13 days. Two years of political uncertainty later, the BJP formed an NDA alliance and was back in power in 1998. However, the government collapsed 13 months after the AIADMK withdrew its support. Re-elections were held and the NDA coalition was again in power. Lal Krishna Advani was elected as the first Home Minister and later the Deputy Prime Minster. The government has been in office for five years. This government is the first non-Congress government that has completed a 5-year term.

The Congress-led the government formed by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), despite hopes of returning to power in 2004. Advani was dealt a serious blow by the election results. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was defeated in the election, resigned from politics. Advani became the top leader of the BJP. From 2004 to 2009, he was the Leader of the Opposition.

Advani vigorously campaigned as the BJP’s prime Ministerial candidate in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. However, despite high hopes from the NDA alliance, United Progressive Alliance (UPA), Advani did not emerge as the Prime Minister of India. Falling behind Advani quit the position of Leader of the Opposition at Lok Sabha, and was replaced by Sushma Swaraj.
