Morarji Desai was an Indian freedom fighter who was also a six-time Prime Minister of India. The first Prime Minister to be non-congress. Morarji was the Prime Minister at 80, and is the only person who has been honored with India’s highest honor Bharat Ratna and Pakistan’s most prestigious award ‘Nishan-ePakistan’. Prior to becoming the Premier, he was at the head of the office of the Deputy Prime Minister, as well as other ministries within the Government of India.

Morarji served as the chief minister of Bombay State. Morarji is also known as a tireless advocate to create an end to the war between India as well as Pakistan. He played a significant part in restoring relations between Pakistan as well as China following India’s first nuclear testing in the year 1974. He also attempted to end India’s Indian intelligence agency known as ‘RAW’.

Morarji Desai was born on 29 February 1896 in Bhadeli which is a village located in the Bulsar district of Gujarat. The father of his son Ranchodji Desai was a school teacher in Bhavnagar and then committed suicide because of his frustration. Morarji completed his schooling at “The Kundala School’ in Saurashtra and then attended Bai Ava High School in Valsad. After graduation from Wilson College, Mumbai, Morarji joined the Gujarat Civil Services. The Gujarat Civil Services accused him of being partial during the Godhra protests in 1927-28 which led to his resignation as the Deputy Collector of Godhra in 1930.

The Freedom Movement and the political world

Morarji Desai left his government job and joined Freedom Movement. Following this, he participated in the movement ‘Unconstitutional’ in opposition to British rule. British under the direction under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. Morarji was in jail multiple times during the movement for freedom. The year 1931 was the time he was an official of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee and later established an organization that was a part that was part of the All India Youth Congress and was elected the president.

After the elections in the province of 1934 and 1937, he was appointed to responsibility for the Revenue and Home Ministries of the Bombay Presidency. As we’ve mentioned Morarji’s name was prominent in the politics of the nation during the war for independence However, his main interest was in the state, and in 1952, Morarji became chief minister of Bombay Province. In 1952, both Gujarat and Maharashtra were incorporated into Bombay Province.

 

In the meantime, the demands for two separate states based on their linguistics that is Maharashtra (Marathi-speaking zone) in addition to Gujarat (Gujarati-speaking zone) was growing however, Morarji was not willing to allow the division. The year was 1960. Morarji was the one to order firings on the ‘Sayukta Maharashtra Smriti’ protestors that resulted in 100 individuals being shot dead. After the tragedy, Morarji was removed from the position as Chief Minister in Bombay and was summoned for a visit to the Centre.

Morarji was appointed the Home Minister by the Central Government. As Home Minister, Morarji banned obscenity from films and plays. Nehru was against socialism. His standing as a nationalist and anti-corruption figure within the Congress party increased and he was considered a potential prime minister following Nehru. However, following the demise of Jawaharlal Nehru, Morarji faced a setback after Lal Bahadur Shastri was made the new Prime Minister.

As the fate of the matter the following year, after the sudden death of Shastri the seat of the Prime Minister was again vacant. After Shastri’s passing, Congress President K. Kamaraj suggested the name of Pandit Nehru’s daughter Indira Gandhi to fill the position of Prime Minister. Morarji Desai also proposed his name for the position of Prime Minister. The impasse was solved by the Congress parliamentarians’ vote and Indira Gandhi won. Morarji was later appointed the Deputy Prime of the government and also Finance Minister Indira Gandhi’s cabinet. He quit his cabinet post in 1969 after Indira took over the Finance minister from his hands. Following that, the Congress was divided into two. Morarji was the first, and Indira Gandhi was the next.

Indira Gandhi was able to secure a stunning victory in the 1971 Lok Sabha elections, but the Morarji faction (who himself was the winner) was unable to do much.

On the 12th of March, 1975 Morarji Desai began a fast to the point of death to support the Gujarat Reform Movement.

In 1975, after an Allahabad High Court declared Indira Gandhi’s election in 1971 illegal, the entire opposition demanded her resignation. This was followed by which a state of emergency was declared and all important leaders such as Morarji Desai, were jailed.

The anti-corruption campaign under the leadership of Jayaprakash Narayan and the anti-Emergency Gali defeated the Congress during their Lok Sabha elections in North India and the Janata Party government was formed under the direction by Morarji Desai.

Prime Minister (1977-1979)

In the March 1977 Lok Sabha elections, the Janata Party won a clear majority, however this time, aside from Morarji there were two other candidates to be the Prime Minister: Chaudhary Charan Singh, and Jagjivan Ram. But Jayaprakash Narayan supported him. Morarji Desai.

So Morarji Desai was elected the Prime Chief Minister in India aged 81. Under his leadership, nine state governments run by Congress were disbanded, and new elections were declared. This act of the government is clearly undemocratic, vindictive, and in violation of the Constitution.

Morarji Desai took initiative to improve relations with the countries around him, Pakistan in addition to China. The former president restored diplomatic relations with China and also restored several constitutional changes implemented under his predecessor, the Indira Gandhi government back to their original format.

During the presidential campaign, Morarji Desai talked about closing down India’s intelligence agency “RAW.” After the election of his Prime Minister, he cut the budget and size of the RAW agency.

The Janata Party succeeded in forming an administration after defeating the Congress over corruption issues and the Emergency but the fighting among the constitutional parties wreaked havoc on the government. In 1979, Raj Narayan and Chaudhary Charan Singh left the government. The government gave them support. Morarji Desai was forced to resign from the position of Premier within a brief time frame which was two years.

Death

After his resignation as Premier Minister Morarji Desai retired from politics at the 83 mark and moved to Mumbai. Morarji Desai passed away on the 10th of April 1995 at the age 99.
