The first step is life

N. R. Narayana Murthy, a Karnataka native, was born in Sidlaghatta on 20 August 1946. Narayana Murthy was a bright student from the start and could solve the question paper quickly compared to other students. He applied for the Indian Institute of Technology entrance exam after schooling but failed to qualify. He then studied Electrical Engineering at the National Institute of Engineering in Mysore. He then joined the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur to complete his M.Tech degree in 1969.

N. R. Narayana Murthy began his career at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad as a Chief Systems Programmer. He worked there on India’s first-ever time-sharing computer system. There, he also implemented the BASIC interpreter at the Electronics Corporation of India Limited. He then started a company called “Softtronics” but it was unsuccessful and he eventually got a job at Patni Computer Systems Pune after one and a half years. He met Nandan Nilekani, who was one of the founders of Infosys. To start Infosys, he borrowed Rs.10000 from his wife.

 

Murthy served as Infosys’ Chief Executive Officer (CEO), from 1981 to 2002. He led Infosys’ growth into a small, profitable software company that was comparable with the largest corporations in the world. Nandan Nilekani, the Infosys founder, succeeded Narayana Murthy as CEO. He was Chairman of the Board from 2002 to 2006. Later, he became Principal Advisor. In 2011, he was the retired chairman of Infosys. He has held several other roles, including Independent Director and Director at large and well-respected companies.

Murthy was appointed Executive Chairman and Additional Director at Infosys on 1 June 2013. He resigned as Infosys’ Executive Chairman on 14 June 2014.

Personal life

N. R. Narayana Murthy married Sudha Murthy (Kulkarni). He is a B.V. B.E. B.E. in Electrical Engineering at Bhoomareddy College of Engineering and Technology. He was awarded a Chief Minister of Karnataka award for being the first in his class. He then went on to do M.E. He graduated in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Science. He also won the first prize and the gold medal. He is now a social worker and an author. Through Infosys Foundation, she does philanthropy.

Two children were born to the Murthy family: son Rohan Murthy, and daughter Akshata Murthy.
