TV Sundaram Iyengar is an Indian industrialist and a top industrialist in the auto industry. In the 1930s when motorbike riding was an unattainable dream, he began an operation to provide buses in the town of Madurai. He established a bus business called ‘TV Sundaram and Sons around 1911, which then evolved into a manufacturing facility for automobiles. The group was later renamed the TVS Group. Today, TVS Group is one of the biggest industrial and business groupings in India.

 

Business is for him not just a pastime, but also a means for serving the average person. T V Sundaram Iyengar, who was a general counsel before establishing his career General Counsel was among many of the top industrialists in the past. He was the first to establish the Road Transport Industry during the Madras Presidency by starting the first bus service in the region. TV Sundaram Iyengar was also an avid thinker and fan of Gandhian philosophical thought. His TVS Group founded by him is now an enormous conglomerate that spans the automotive sector and financial services.

TV Sundaram Iyengar was born in 1877 in Tirukurungudi in the Tirunelveli district of present-day Tamil Nadu (Madras Presidency of British India). At the request of his father, the young man began his career as a lawyer. He was a member of his first job with the Indian Railways and then a bank. Following his departure from his work, the business he was running became his own.

Sundaram Iyengar had a passion for business, which led him to leave his job and join the motor transportation business in 1911. He founded ‘TV Sundaram and Sons, and began an operation for buses within Madurai city. The company later morphed into the TVS Group. It was during World War II when there was a shortage of petrol throughout the Madras Presidency. Madras Presidency, he started the TVS Gas Plant to supply the demands.

 

He also set up factories for rubber retreading, in addition to the Madras Auto Service Limited and Sundaram Motors Limited. Through the 50s Madras Auto Service Limited was the biggest distributor of General Motors. So what began as a single-person hobby turned into a thriving family company.

The current business of “TVS Group” has been diversified into the manufacturing of automotive components automobile dealerships, electronics components, and financial services and employs over 40000 people. The company’s operations have also increased to include IT services and consulting. TVS Group’s turnover is around 100 million dollars.

In addition to having a successful business, television celebrity Iyengar is also an advocate for the arts and an active thinker. He was an ardent Gandhian and married his daughter who was widowed at the age of 15 (TS Sundaram) according to Gandhiji’s request. TS Sundaram went ahead in the national movement. His Government of India issued postage bills in his honor.

The senior Congress head and the Governor General of India at the time, C Rajagopalachari (Rajaji) praised Sundaram Iyengar for taking a vacation from working at the appropriate moment and handing over the helm to his sons.

Personal life

Sundaram Iyengar had five sons and three daughters. According to the customs of a masculine-dominated Tamil Brahmin family, all male members of the family joined in the family business. Following the tragic loss of one of his children, his four sons were part of the company. His youngest son, TS Santhanam founded the company ‘Sundaram Finance which is regarded as the ‘father of the Truck Finance Industry in India.

Sundaram Iyengar died on 28 April 1955 in his home in Kodaikanal. He was 78 at the date of his death.
