Varghese Kurian is the father of the ‘White Revolution in India. Kurian is also known by the name of the ‘Father of the Dhava Revolution’. He laid the foundation for the cooperative dairy sector model that transformed India from a milk-poor nation to the world’s biggest milk producer. Operation Flood was his first venture to bring India to the very top among the milk production companies. Dr. Kurian Raman Magsaysay established more than 30 noteworthy institutions over his life and has been honored with distinctions like Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.

Kurien was born on the 26th of November 1921 in Kozhikode, Kerala. He received his science degree from Laila College, Chennai in 1940. He also received obtained an engineering diploma from GC Engineering College, Chennai. In the past, he received a specialization in TISCO, Jamshedpur, and later at the Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairy, Bangalore based on a scholarship offered by the Government of India to study dairy engineering at Michigan State University. He is a graduate of Michigan State University. The year 1948 was the first time Mechanical Engineering was one of the subjects in Dairy Engineering.

Doctor. Varghese Kurian returned to India from America in 1948 and was appointed to his first job in the Government Dairy Department. In May 1949 the department appointed him as Dairy Engineer at the Government Research Creamery at Anand, Gujarat. At the same time, Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited (KDCMPUL) had to contend with the privately-owned Paulson Dairy. Motivated by this competition Dr. Kurian quit his job and volunteered to assist KDCMPUL President Tribhuvandas Patel in setting up a processing plant for milk. This is how Amul came into existence. Kurian’s vision is to make India self-sufficient in the production of milk and improve the lives of farmers.

Kurien is also believed to be responsible for creating buffalo milk powder at the beginning of time. In the past, the powder of milk was created from cow’s milk. The main reason behind Amul’s popularity is that due to this technology he could compete against rivals like Nestle. Up until now, Nestle made powder using cow’s milk because of the large production of milk from cows in Europe.

In anticipation of the popularity of Amul Amid Amul’s success, the prime minister at the time Lal Bahadur Shastri set up the National Milk Development Board (NDDB) in 1965 to extend this Amul design to other regions across the world. Kurien was appointed the chairman. NDDB began ‘Operation Flood in the year 1970, which made India the world’s biggest manufacturer of dairy products. Kurien was President of NDDB for 33 years between 1965 and 1998. The country’s milk consumption was about 20 million tonnes by the 1960s and was at the 122 million tonnes mark by the year 2011.

In 1973 Kurian, Dr. Kurian founded GCMMF (Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation) to sell dairy products and served as its President from 1973 to the year 2006. In addition, Dr. Kurian was also the president of the Institute of Rural Management from 1979 until 2006.

One fascinating aspect of this man’s life is the man who was referred to as the ‘White revolution and the ‘Milkman from India India did not drink milk by himself. He often said”I do not drink milk because I do not like it..’

Famous filmmaker Shyam Benegal Dr. Kurien made a film “Manthan,” that was based on the cooperative movement.

15 universities rewarded him for his high marks for his achievements.

After a short illness, on 9 September 2012 Kurien died on September 9, 2012. Kurien died in Nadiad town in Anand, Gujarat. He was age 90.

Dr. Kurian has been honored with numerous national and international prizes for bringing about change for rural dwellers and farmers.

The Government of India honored him with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.

Recognized with an award called the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership.

Carnegie Water World Peace Prize.

He also won his International Person of the Year Award from America.
