Jagdish Mukhi, a former leader of Bharatiya Janata Party from Delhi (BJP), is now the incumbent MLA. Jagdish Mukhi, the Janak Puri assembly constituency’s current MLA, previously held the portfolios for finance, planning, taxation, and higher education within the Delhi government. His tireless efforts to improve the lives of Delhi citizens are a credit to him.
Jagdish Mukhi, then minister of finance, banned lottery trading in Delhi in 1994. He worked to persuade people to reduce their alcohol consumption. He was the minister of excise and declared the number of dry days per year. As minister of higher education, he was instrumental in the establishment of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha university in record time of eight month. He was also honored as the best planning minister in the country and received the Delhi Vidhan Sabha’s best MLA award for two times.

Jagdish Mukhi was the son of Late Ram Mukhi (now in Pakistan) and Late Laxi Devi Mukhi (now in Pakistan). His family immigrated from Pakistan to Sohna, Gurgaon during Partition in 1947.

Mukhi completed his matriculation at the Government School, Sohna, and his commerce degree from Raj Rishi College Alwar (Rajasthan). He was active in RSS activities during his student years. As Akhil Bharatiya Vivekanand Parishad (ABVP), candidate, he was elected president of Raj Rishi College’s students union. He graduated from Shri Ram College of Commerce of Delhi University in 1967 with a Master of Commerce.

He worked tirelessly for Delhi University Teacher’s Association from 1969 to 1970, along with Om Prakashkohli, a senior BJP leader, and currently Governor of Gujarat. Mukhi wed Prem Mukhi, a Rewari native who was active in social development work for women empowerment. They are blessed with a son Atul and a daughter Latika.

Jagdish Mukhi also wrote a book about Company Law and Secretarial Practice. This is an excellent study material for Institute of Company Secretaries of India.

Jagdish Mukhi began his political career in 1975, on the 25th of June 1975, when the emergency was declared. Since 1980, he has represented Janak Puri constituency and won seven times from that constituency. He has held various positions in the BJP, including President of BJP Janak Puri Mandal, General Secretary and President BJP West District, General Secretary of BJP Delhi, and in-charge (Prabhari), of BJP affairs in the state state of Jammu & Kashmir. Most recently, he was in charge of BJP affairs in Haryana. His political acumen was greatly appreciated during the Haryana Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha elections. The BJP achieved its highest ever performance in Haryana, which led to the formation of the BJP government without the support of any political party.

Jagdish Mukhi was a possible candidate of BJP for the position of Chief Minister in Delhi. In September, Lt Governor Najeeb Jun sent a report to President asking permission to examine the possibility of government formation through consultation with the largest party in Delhi. Mukhi is now a candidate for chief minister in the forthcoming Delhi Assembly elections, which will be held in February 2015.
