Medak Church, officially known as the Cathedral Church of Saint Mary, is located in the town of Medak in the Indian state of Telangana. The church is the largest in Asia and a prime example of Gothic Revival architecture.

History:

Medak Church was built in the early 20th century by Reverend Charles Walker Posnett. Reverend Posnett was a British missionary who came to India in 1895 and spent much of his time in the erstwhile Hyderabad state.

The construction of the church started in 1914 and was completed in 1924. Reverend Posnett is said to have been inspired by medieval Gothic Revival architecture and wanted to build a church to reflect the grandeur of that era.

Architecture:

The Medak Church was built in the Gothic Revival style and was built entirely of stone. The length of the church is 175 feet, width 110 feet, height 175 feet. The church has a 175 feet tall bell tower and is one of the tallest bell towers in Asia.

The church has three entrances, each of which is decorated with beautiful sculptures. The engravings depict scenes from the Bible and are an excellent example of the artist’s craftsmanship of the period.

The interior of the church is equally stunning. The church has a seating capacity of 5,000 people. Also decorated with stained glass windows depicting scenes from the Bible. The altar is made of marble and has a beautiful mosaic of Christ and the apostles.

The church also has a pipe organ, which was built in Germany and shipped to India. The organ has 3,000 pipes and is one of the largest in Asia.
