History
According to Puranas that this temple has its beginnings in the period of Amrita Manthan in the year 365, in which Vasuki was utilized as a rope to stir the ocean and extract nectar or amrita. After a long churning process, Vasuki the serpent god was tired and spilled the poison into the sea. The gods were horrified and immediately alerted Lord Shiva about the incident. The temple was constructed in the 16th century by Cholas to honor Naganathar. Since then, numerous renovations have been carried out and the current building is believed to have been constructed by the chiefs during the 16th century.
