The Osmania University, founded in 1918, is the seventh oldest in the country, the third oldest in South India and the first established in the princely state of Hyderabad. Although the need for a university for the Hyderabad state was felt by both the intelligentsia and the people for a long time, the initiative came from an official, Sir Akbar Hydari, who was then the Interior Minister of the State Government.
