Education and early life

Shri Kovind was born in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh on the 1st of October 1945. His humble beginnings were due to his modest family. He went to school and college in Kanpur. He studied commerce for a bachelor’s degree and later received his Law degree at Kanpur University.

 

Professional Career

Shri Kovind was enrolled in 1971 as an advocate at the Bar Council of Delhi. From 1977 to 1979, he was Counsel of the Union Government at the Delhi High Court. He was appointed Advocate-on-Record at the Supreme Court of India in 1978. He was the Standing Counsel of the Union Government at the Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993. He also assisted the weaker sections of society through the Free Legal Aid Society of New Delhi.

Parliament and Public Life

Shri Kovind was elected to the Rajya Sabha (the Upper House of Parliament) from Uttar Pradesh in April 1994. He served six-year terms, one after the other, until March 2006. He gained extensive experience in governance through his participation in many Parliamentary Committees. As a member of the Indian delegation, he addressed the United Nations General Assembly on 22 October 2003.
Shri Kovind is a passionate advocate for education as a tool for social empowerment. He is a strong supporter of greater participation by women in nation-building. He has also been calling for more opportunities for the poor, particularly the disabled and orphans. He was a member of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University’s Board of Management and the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata.

Shri Kovind was elected Governor of the State of Bihar in August 2015. His tenure as Governor was a time of great appreciation for his commitment to the Constitution’s values. In his capacity as Chancellor, he introduced many reforms to the State Universities’ working and updated technology. He also made it transparent when a Vice-Chancellor was appointed. Shri Kovind’s accomplishments as a Governor have boosted his credentials to run for the presidency in 2017. He has fulfilled his duties as India’s first citizen with wisdom and humility since his election to the highest constitutional office. Till June 2022, he has visited 33 countries. This has helped to increase India’s international reach and footprint. During these State Visits President Kovind shared India’s timeless message about peace, progress, and harmony. He has been awarded the highest state honors by six countries: Equatorial Guinea (Madagascar), Eswatini (Croatia), Bolivia, Republic of Guinea, Republic of Guinea, and Madagascar).
In May 2018, President Kovind, as the Supreme Commander of India’s Armed Forces, paid a historic visit to Siachen’s ‘Kumar Post,’ the highest battlefield in the entire world.

Shri Kovind was married to Shrimati Savita Kovind on May 24, 1974. They had a son and a girl.
