Personal life
Chauhan was born in Sekhupur, Azamgarh in present-day Uttar Pradesh to Kharpattu Chauhan. He is a graduate. Chauhan is married Muhari Devi. He has four children with her.
Politics
Chauhan began his political career from Dalit Mazdoor Kisan Party in 1985. He became the first MLA in his political life. He then contested numerous Legislative Assembly elections (Vidhan Sabha), from various parties, and won the most number of times. He was elected as the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Election candidate for Bharatiya Janata Party from Ghosi in 2017. He defeated Abbas Ansari, Bahujan Samaj Party’s close competitor, by a margin of 7,003 voters.

Fagu Chauhan was born on January 1, 1948 in Sheikhpura, Azamgarh. His father’s name was Kharpattu Chauhan. They have three boys and four girls. Coming from a backward caste, Fagu Chauhan became an MLA from the Ghosi Assembly for the first time in the year 1985 from the Dalit Kisan Mazdoor Party and his political journey started from here.

Fagu Chauhan was first elected MLA in 1991 on Janata Dal ticket.
In the year 1996, he reached the assembly on a BJP ticket.
In 2002 too, he won the assembly elections on a BJP ticket.
Fagu Chauhan, who reached the assembly twice after joining the BJP, later left the party and joined the BSP. Even after this, his caravan of victory in his constituency did not stop.
In 2007, he won the Ghosi assembly seat on a BSP ticket.
In 2017, he again joined the BJP and contested the elections.
This time also he won the assembly elections.

Chauhan was elected 29th Governor of Bihar in July 2019.
Many universities were involved in multiple scams during his tenure as Governor of Bihar, and ex-officio Chancellor at State Universities. These scams were exposed by raids of the Special Vigilance Unit of Bihar Government. Magadh University’s was the most unusual, as Vice-Chancellor Rajendra Prasad was arrested under Section 420 IPC for Rs30 crore fraud. His home was raided, which was the first time that a VC of University had been done so. Chauhan, the University’s Chancellor, didn’t fire the VC. Chauhan hails from UP too. This led to speculations.
The VC was on medical leave, leaving the post de facto vacant. He stated that the University was not well-equipped for vigilance raids because it created fear. Other University staff were also brought in and charged an additional fee, including the Exam Controller, VC, and other members of staff. Magadh University experienced the longest academic delays in recent years due to multiple exams pending. These issues prompted multiple protests, in which the Governor’s effigies were set on fire. This is not a new phenomenon as the Governor is an honorable constitutional position. These students protested against Governor Chauhan’s inability to conduct exams and delayed sessions. They demanded the resignation of Chauhan and his staff.
