Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Ananthapuramu, had its beginning as the Postgraduate Center of Sri Venkateswara University in 1967-1968. It gained autonomy in 1976 and fulfilled the desires of the people in the region, the Autonomous Graduate Center was granted the status of a university in the year initially Sri Krishnadevaraya University acted as a unified university. It was awarded the status of an affiliated university in the year 1988. Presently it offers the higher educational needs of the Rayalaseema region in general and the Ananthapuramu district in particular. The Postgraduate Center in Kurnool, which was placed under the jurisdiction of the University in 1993, became a separate university in 2008.
