It is believed that the Guruvayoor Sri Krishna Temple is a holy pilgrimage center that is dedicated to Lord Krishna, the avatar that is the son of Lord Vishnu who is the protector and preserver of all the Universe. It is situated in Guruvayur town of the Thrissur district of the Indian state of Kerala which is sometimes called ‘God’s Own Country’. The god of The temple’s deity is Sri Vishnu and the image depicts him standing in a seated position with four hands holding a discus, conch lotus, mace, and conch within each one of his fingers. The temple is frequently called The Dwaraka from South India and also Bhuloka Vaikuntha where the dwelling place of Lord Vishnu. The god of worship is ascribed to the prescribed rituals of Adi Shankara, who initiated the revival of the Hindu faith. It is among the most significant and sacred holy sites for Hindus from Kerala and is frequented by devotees from across the world.

The story of the Guruvayur Temple

 

The temple is believed to be restored in the year 1638 A.D. and by that time it was an important pilgrimage site in Kerala. The Dutch took over and burned this temple in 1716. The temple was restored in 1766. Haider Ali also came close to destruction of it in the year 1766 but was released in a ransom payment by temple officials. He did however gift a “Devadaya for the temple in the year 1780 A.D. Haider Ali’s son, Tipu Sultan plundered and burned the temple in 1789, and tried to establish Islam within the state. He was later exiled in 1789 by the British and the gods were restored in the shrine. It was not until 1841 when it was that the Government of Madras restored the Devadaya that was taken over by Tipu Sultan. The temple was reborn. the temple and it was prospering once more. A large portion of the temple was renovated and rebuilt and numerous reforms were implemented in the management of the temple during the supervision of the Zamorin beginning in 1928. In November of 1970, the temple was devastated by a massive fire that began to rage within the temple. It was eventually put out following numerous efforts by the population of the town. Amazingly it was the Sanctum Sanctorum along with the goddess and the temples dedicated to Ganesha, Ayyappa & Devi were spared from the flame and remained in good condition.

 

The significance of the Guruvayur Temple

 

One of the unique features that are unique to the temple is the fact that the depiction of the Lord isn’t made out of metal or stone, rather, it’s a mix of Padala Anjanam (also known as black bismuth). The legend says that the Idol was created by the Lord Himself, who then gave it to his devotee for him to put it in a location at his discretion. The Idol was then erected in Guruvayoor following the time that Dwarka was swallowed by a tidal wave and vanished under the waves. It is beautiful that it enthralls all with its beauty and radiance. It also portrays God the Lord as the perfect example of love and compassion.

 

The Architecture that is part of the Guruvayur Temple

 

The time of the temple goes to a period almost 5500 years ago and is believed to have been constructed by Sage Vishwakarma who was a god-like architect. The temple was built so that the first sunlight rays of the Sun are directly upon the foot of the Lord during Vishu day. The current temple’s structure is constructed in the typical Kerala architectural style, with the main entrance coming from the eastern side and an additional entry from the west side. This Idol that is of the Lord is situated in such a way that it is seen at the front of the temple and acts as a way of inviting guests to go inside the temple.

One of the rituals which are performed at the temple is Thulabaram where devotees weigh themselves against various items and food items, which are then given by the temple. A different important ceremony is Annaprasanam which involves the first meal of a baby.

The Pujas at the temple are carried out following strict religious rules set out in the works of Adi Shankara himself. The temple is a celebration of every Vaishnava festival especially Vrichika Ekadesi which is believed to be very significant and is held throughout the duration of. During this time, the first Puja is performed for Lord Krishna at the beginning of each day after which a series of Archana and Pujas are carried out. The time in Chitirai is also a significant event, as it is when the Head Priest offers the Devotees coins that are believed to be a gift from the Lord himself. The most significant aspect of the Temple is its 52 residents Elephants who participate in temple ceremonies during festivals.
