Suryanar Temple, Arulmigu Shiva Surya Peruman Temple Suryanar Koil Surya Sthala, one of the Navagraha locations. In honor of Lord Surya the temple is adorned with Suryanarayana as the god of the temple in the form of a charioteer with Vinanam depicting the Chariot that is the Sun. In the main shrine, Suryanarayana is standing alongside Usha Devi to the left, and Pratyusha Devi, or Chhayadevi in the center. Different shrines are dedicated to Eight Grahas as well as Grahas. The temple also houses statues dedicated to Kashi Vishwanath along with Visalakshi in the sanctuary. The temples of the other gods of the universe are facing Suryanarayana. Sri Suryanarayana is shown with his lovers Usha Devi, and Chaya Devi in a reclined position inside the sacred sanctum sacred. The idol of Bhagavan Suryanarayana depicts the saint as a savior, with one hand in surrender and the other placed on his legs. The other shrines to the gods of the planets are located opposite the sanctum sanctorum. It is the only temple in the Navagraha places that is not specifically dedicated to Lord Shiva. Shiva is the primary god in the other temples of Navagraha. This temple is a renowned pilgrimage site within South India as it offers relief from Shani Dosha. History
Suryanar Kovil Temple is an ancient temple that was constructed around the year 1100 by King Kulotuna I, a member of the Chola dynasty. It was at that time called Kulothungachola Marthandalaya. The king of Kulotuna is believed to have been a wealthy man as a member of the Gahadwal Dynasty, which was Sun-based. The temple was constructed by the influence of this relationship. The shrine is mentioned in the song by Muthuswamy Dikshitar, which begins with the word ‘Suryamurte”.
As per the Vishnu Purana, Brahma created the sun to eliminate the darkness of the universe. Lord Surya got married to Ushadevi, who is also called Sandhya as one of the daughters of Tuvastu. After the birth of 3 children Usha was unable to bear the scorching heat from Surya so she decided to design her image of Pratyusha and then leave her with Surya She escaped into the forest to perform the most intense penance. In the dark about these circumstances, Surya mistakes Chaya for Sandhya, and three children are born to them: Shani Savarni Manu, Shani, and Tapathi. Being aware of what is real, Surya finds Sandhya and requests her to return with Surya. From then on, Usha and Chhaya are called Surya’s two wives. As the sun rises, it is known as Ushakalam and when it sets, it is known as Sayakalam depicting these two wives of the sun.

Architecture
The temple was built using the Dravidian style under the Chola rule and was later upgraded by the Vijayanagara Kingships. The current granite shrine is believed to be constructed during the reign of King Srivijaya. The main gopuram in Rajagopuram is a five-tiered gopuram that pierces the enclosure of this temple’s rectangle design. The temple is 15.5 meters in height and has 5 gopurams on the top. The first thing you see upon coming into this temple is the sacred platform, also known as The Bali Preetham, and the mandapam featuring the statue of a horse, the symbol that is Lord Surya. The main shrine of Lord Surya is located on a high structure and houses pictures of Surya along with his companions Usha as well as Chaya. Pictures from Vishwanathar, Vishalakshi Nataraja, Sivakamini, Vinayagar, and Murugan can be seen in the hallway leading into the shrine’s central one. The central shrine is a representation of Guru or Brihaspati one of the gods of the planets with an axis. There are separate temples dedicated to the other seven planet deities. These temples are constructed inside Suryanar Mandir in such a manner that the Lord is facing the Sun.
Religious significance
As one of two temples in which Bhagavan Surya serves as the principal deity, this temple holds significant significance and significance in Hinduism. In addition in contrast to other Navagraha temples in which Lord Shiva serves as the primary god it is the only Navagraha temple with Lord Surya being the primary god.
