Begum Hazrat Mahal was the wife of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Awadh. In 1857, in the first independence war, He rebelled in opposition to his country’s British East India Company. Begum Hazrat Mahal took over the throne of Awadh and then occupied Lucknow after the British East India Company officials took over the entire state of Awadh and took her husband of her Nawab Wajdali Shah away to Kolkata.
He took on the British army and placed his son Birjis Khadar on the throne. Hazrat Mahal was a remarkable institution capacity because of which the zamindars, peasants, and soldiers from Awadh province backed the province and prospered under his guidance. Though he battled against the British throughout his time, ultimately faced defeat and fled to take refuge in Nepal and died there in 1879.

Begum Hazrat Mahal was born in 1820 in the Faizabad district of Awadh province. His birth name was Muhammadi Khatoon. He was a prostitute of the profession and was a part of the royal Harem as a khawasin after her parents decided to sell her. Then she sells to royal brokers. After that, she was awarded her title Pari and was referred to as Mahak Paris. After she was a Nawab of Awadh was able to include her in his royal harems, she became a Beg and was awarded her title as ‘Hazrat Mahal‘ upon she gave birth to her child Birjis Khader.
She was the spouse of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the ruler of Tajdar-e-Awadh. In 1856, when the British took over Awadh 1856, and then sent Awadh’s Nawab to Kolkata, Begum Hazrat Mahal was able to assume the reigns of Awadh. He took on with the British army, putting his minor son Birjis Khadar as the king.

1857 First War of Independence
During the First War of Independence of 1857-58, the supporters of Begum Hazrat Mahal, led by Raja Jalal Singh, rebelled against the British East India Company’s troops and seized Lucknow. After the capture of Lucknow, Hazrat Mahal placed his son Birjis Khader as the king of Awadh. Following this, Begum Hazrat Mahal was forced to withdraw after the Company’s army reclaimed Lucknow and the majority of Awadh.
In the following years, he collaborated along with Nana Saheb (the Peshwa who initiated the revolt in Kanpur against the British from Kanpur) as well as later, he organized the attack on Shahjahanpur together with his fellow Maulvi from Faizabad. In the aftermath, the British have been accused of interfering with the religious practices of Hindus as well as Muslims.
Later life
After losing to British troops, the British, Begum Hazrat Mahal was forced to take shelter in Nepal. At first the Nepali Rana Prim Minister Jung Bahadur refused, but later, he got asylum. Then he lived the remainder of his life in Nepal which is where he passed away in 1879. He was buried in an area of Jama Masjid in Kathmandu.

Memorial
The mausoleum of Begum Hazrat Mahal is close to Ghantagarh. Jama Masjid (at Chandigarh) is located in the middle of Kathmandu. It is located just to Durbar Marg. It is managed by the Jama Masjid Central Committee.
On August 15, 1962, the park ‘Old Victorian Park located situated in Hazratganj, Lucknow was renamed “Begum H. Mahal Park” to honor Begum Hazrat Mahal. With name changes, a granite memorial was also constructed there. Celebrations such as Ramlila, Dussehra, and Lucknow Mahotsav are held in Begum Hazrat Mahal Park.
On May 10, 1984, the Government of India issued a postage stamp to honor him.
