Chidambaram Subramaniam, an Indian politician, and freedom fighter was born in India. In the Government of India, he served as Minister of Finance and Minister of Defense. He was also the Governor of Maharashtra. He served as India’s Minister for Food and Agriculture. He is known as the ‘Father Of The Green Revolution. The country was in severe food crises during the 1960s and 1970s. It imported food from other countries to replace it, but the “Green Revolution” changed India’s agricultural outlook. India has been able to produce its agricultural products and encouraged farmers to use new technology.

Chidambaram Subramaniam, born on 30 January 1910, was raised in Senguttaipalayan (Coimbatore district), Tamil Nadu. He was educated in Pollachi, and then he moved to Chennai to complete his B.Sc. in Physics at Presidency College. He later studied law at Madras Law College. He founded the ‘Vana Malar Sangam,’ along with his friends, during his college years. ‘Pithan” with his colleagues at Gobichettipalayam, Erode, Tamil Nadu; performed. His colleagues Periasamy Thuan, KS Ramaswamy Gounder, and O. V. Algesan also started a journal.

Politics

 

Subramaniam College was where Chidambaram was studying. The freedom movement had a profound impact on the country and Chidambaram could not ignore it. He was active in civil disobedience movements. He was a member of the “Quit India” movement in 1942 and went to prison. Later, he was elected to the Constituent Assembly. He played a part in the drafting of the Constitution of India. He was the Madrasa State’s Minister of Education, Law, and Finance from 1952 to 1962 under Rajaji and K. Kamaraj. He was also the Leader of the House at the Madras Legislative Assembly. In 1962, he was elected to the Lok Sabha. He then became the Minister of Steel and Mines for the Centre. He was then appointed Minister of Food and Agriculture to the Union Government. From 2 May 1971 to 22 Jul 1972, he was Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.

The Green Revolution and Chidambaram Subramaniam

Chidambaram Subramaniam, B. Sivaraman, MS Swaminathan, and Norman E. Borlaug were also key architects of the Green Revolution in India. The program, which was based on modern technology and methodological innovation, led to record wheat production in 1972. He was Minister of Food and Agriculture and encouraged farmers to use more modern seeds, chemical fertilizers, and scientific methods of farming. The ‘Green Revolution’ led to increased production and India becoming self-sufficient in food grains.

MS Swaminathan, an agricultural scientist who played a crucial role in the “Green Revolution”, was elected to this position. Varghese Kurien was appointed Chairman of the National Dairy Development Board’ when he initiated the ‘White Revolution’ in India to increase milk production. Varghesekurian says that ‘Chidambaram’s role in White Revolution hasn’t been mentioned much. Subramaniam also established the National Agro Foundation.

Minister of Finance and Emergency

He supported Indira and made her the Congress President for the Indira-Gandhi faction when the Congress split in 1969. He was Finance Minister in the Indira Gandhi government. He advised Indira Gandhi, as finance minister, to devalue the rupee. During the Emergency, he was also the minister for the country. He joined another faction after the Emergency and left Indira Gandhi.

In 1979, Chaudhary was the Defense Minister of India under the Charan Singh government. He was elected Governor of Maharashtra in 1990. However, P.V. Narasimha Rao quit criticizing the government’s performance.
