Dr. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was born on the 13th of May 1905 in the Hauz Qazi area of Old Delhi. Name of his father was Colonel Jalnur Ali Ahmed, and his mom was the child of Nawab of Lahori. His father worked for the Indian Medical Service in Assam. His father urged him to go to Assam due to his refusal to take part in an event called the Shillong Club with guests from European nations during an event that was hosted by General Sibram Bora when he was a young child. In the end, he was transferred to the province in the northwestern region.

 

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed’s initial education was at a state-run high school located in the Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh. After matriculating at Delhi Government High School, Ahmed traveled to England around 1923 to further his education. He received his post-secondary education at St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge. After he pursued an education at a higher level, he began practicing law in the Lahore High Court (now in Pakistan) in 1928 after his return from London.

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed got married to 21-year-old Abida on the 9th of November 1945, at the age of 40. A graduate of Aligarh Muslim University, Abida is from an elite family from Uttar Pradesh. Then Begum Abida was elected to the Lok Sabha from Uttar Pradesh in 1981.

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed is an accomplished politician from India that has a legacy of his political life on the Indian people. His legacy has inspired the Indian people until today. The man is also regarded as the great father from Assam in the state of Assam and India. Through his theories and ideas, he contributed tremendous contributions to the Indian liberty movement. As president of India, He contributed a great deal to the nation’s development, demonstrating his dedication to selfless serving and moral principles. Under the guidance under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as well, he was a leader in the nation as a prominent leader.

While within England, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was introduced to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1925. He was extremely impressed by the innovative ideas of Nehru and began to consider him as a guide and friend. He began cooperating with Nehru in 1930 and onwards. In response to Nehru’s requests, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed joined the Indian National Congress and took an active part in the fight for freedom in India. His fellow religious leaders convinced Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed to sign up for the Muslim League. He was active in the Satyagraha movement in the year 1940 in support of the nation’s independence and was later detained and sent to prison. Aside from that being arrested, he was detained again on the 9th of August, 1942, when he returned from attending the historical Mumbai gathering that was held in the All India Congress Committee (AICC) to support the “Quit India Movement.”. Thus till April 1945, i.e. for three-and-a-half decades, was imprisoned and posed a threat to the security of the nation.

He held a variety of crucial positions within various key positions within the Congress party. The Congress party elected him into the Assam Legislative Assembly in 1935. In 1936, he joined as an official participant in the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. In September 1938, he took over as the minister for Finance, Revenue, and Labor in the state of Assam. In his time as Minister, he demonstrated his ability to manage effectively. While he was a minister, he introduced the “Assam Agricultural Income Tax Bill’, the very first bill in India to establish taxes on the tea plantation land. Because of the pro-labor policy that he enacted, the employees of the British-owned ‘Assam Oil Corporation Limited went to strike. Due to this, Ali Ahmed faced severe criticism. The effectiveness of his administrative skills was also evident in these instances.

Post-Independence Activities

After the country’s independence, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1952. Following that, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was appointed Attorney General by the Government of Assam. The Advocate General was elected twice into the Assam Legislative Assembly (1957-62 and 1962-67 using a Congress ticket. He was appointed minister within the Chaliha cabinet in the year 1957. In 1971 he was elected as a member of the Lok Sabha from the Barpeta constituency. While in office as a Lok Sabha member, he was active in various ministries such as cooperation in agriculture and food with education industrial development, and corporate law. He was an official participant in the All India Congress Committee from 1947 to 1974.

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was an extremely multi-faceted man. He also was interested in various extracurricular sports and activities, which were popular at the time. As a football, tennis golfer, cricketer, and tennis player, he was elected as president of the Assam Football Association and Assam Cricket Association many times. In addition, he also serves as the Vice President of the Assam Sports Council. In the following years, he became an associate part of the Delhi Golf Club and Delhi Gymkhana Club in 1961. Fakhruddin Ali was elected the president of the All India Cricket Association in 1967. In 1975, on the president’s trip to Yugoslavia, The U.S. University of Pristina in Kosovo conferred him with the honorary degree of doctoral.

Death

The late Dr. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed could not finish his five-year period as President 5th of India. He had a heart attack shortly after his return from a trip across Southeast Asian countries and breathed his final breath on the 11th of February 1977, at the age of 71 in Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
