Haradanahalli Dode Gowda Deva Gowda was an Indian politician from India. The 11th prime minister of India and the 14th Chief Minister of the state of Karnataka. He is the head of a political group called Janata Dal. Anjaneya gained prominence in the world of politics during Holanarasipuram as the leader of the Co-operative Society and later as an official of the Taluka Development Board. Deve Gowda was elected as the Prime Minister of India as the head of the HD United Front government. He was officially sworn in by the government on 1 June 1996. He was not able to stay as the Prime Minister for an extended period of time. He had to step down after serving as the in office for around 10 months.

The first step in life 

HD Deve Gowda was born on May 18, 1933, in Haradanahalli, a village in Holanarasipurata Taluk of Hassan district, Karnataka. He is the son of Dode Gowda and Devamma. Being a farmer’s family, he is an engineering degree in civil engineering. After finishing his studies, Gowda entered politics at the age of 20. He got married to Chinamma who had 4 sons: H.D. Balakrishna Goud, H.D. Revanna, Dr. H.D. Ramesh, and H.D. Kumar Swamy. The father of two girls, H.D. Anusuya and H.D. That is Shailaja. His son. H.D. Kumaraswamy was the Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Life in politics

Gowda began an active political career a young age. He became a member of his party Indian National Congress and remained as a member until 1962. Following that, he entered the elections as a non-partisan candidate for the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and won. He won three elections in succession (4th (1967-71) 5th (1972.77) and 6th (1978.83)). He was Leader of the opposition in the State Legislative Assembly from 1972-1976 and 1976-1977. He was in prison during the Emergency in the country by Premier Indira Gandhi in 1975. In the course of his imprisonment, the prisoner read a lot of books and spoke to politicians who were in jail at the period and enriching his political understanding.


This knowledge helped his political ideas and personality develop. Gowda quit his position in the Sixth Assembly on 22 November 1982. He was then appointed Secretary of Public Works and Irrigation in the Seventh and Eighth Legislatures. In his time as the Irrigation Minister, numerous new irrigation projects were launched. The year 1987 was the time he quit from cabinet to protest against the lack of funds for irrigation. He was in the 1989 election and was forced to endure defeat. In 222 of the Assembly seats, the Janata Dal party got just two seats.

Then, in 1991, he was elected to the Parliament from the Hasan Parliamentary Constituency. He was instrumental in bringing up the issues of the inhabitants of Karnataka and the farmers in particular. He was highly regarded by the people of Karnataka as well as all members of the Parliament. He was elected an official leader of Janata Dal twice. In the aftermath of his election as the leader of the Legislative Assembly from the Janata Dal Party and was appointed as the 14th chief minister of Karnataka on December 11, 1994. Following this victory, he was elected from the Ramnagar assembly seat, which he won with massive support.


The year 1995 was the first time Deve Gowda went to Switzerland in addition to the Middle East for the HD International Economist Forum as well as other topics related to development. In 1996, Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao was forced to step down after the Congress party was defeated in during the Lok Sabha elections. Following that, H.D. Dev Goa became the 11th Prime Minister of India. The reason for this was the inability to form a government by the Bharatiya Janata Party to form the government, and also the creation of the United Front Alliance (a combined group of non-Congress regional and non-BJP political parties) to create the government. He resigned as chief minister of Karnataka following his appointment as Premier. The Prime Minister was India from June 1, 1996, until 21 April 1997.

HD Deve Gowda worked for the improvement of farmers during his time in the political arena. He also worked to improve the condition of Karnataka. As the chief minister of Karnataka and he established the reservation system in which there was a provision of reservations for backward classes, minorities, and scheduled castes, as well as women, and tribes that were scheduled. He declared that the problem of “Eidga” terrain in Hubli was to be settled and a survey across the state was to be conducted to ensure the growth of the State.
