Hakeem Ajmal Khan is an Indian doctor, a politician of the nationalist party as well as a freedom fighter. He brought back Unani treatment in India through the establishment of Tibbia College in Delhi in the early 20th century. He was a leader of the nationalist movement and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. Ajmal Khan was involved in numerous important movements in the struggle for freedom. He was part of the very first major movement in the country, the ‘Non-Cooperation Movement.

He also commanded the Khilafat Movement. He was a member of the Indian National Congress and presided over 1921’s Congress session in Ahmedabad. This makes him only the 5th Muslim to be elected the president of the Indian National Congress. He was not just involved in the national organization as well but in the realm of education. Hakeem Ajmal Khan is among the first founders of Jamia Islamia University. He served as the Chancellor from 1920 until 1927. He was the only one to serve as president of the All India Khilafat Committee and Muslim League along with Congress.

The first step in life.

Hakeem Ajmal Khan was born on the 11th of February 1868 in Delhi. He was part of Hakims from the family that moved to India along with Babur who was the very one and only Mughal Sultan. The Hakims were highly skilled Unani doctors who were involved in this profession following their arrival in India. He was referred to as the ‘King of Delhi’. Hakim Ajmal Khan’s father Hakim Sharif Khan served as a physician in Mughal Sultan Shah Alam and established a hospital school to provide Unani medical training.

As a young man, Ajmal Khan memorized the Qur’an and also acquired traditional Islamic knowledge in the process. Ajmal Khan also learned Arabic as well as Persian and later gave all his attention to studying Unani medical practices under the guidance of his older family members. He studied Unani medication under the guidance of Hakeem Abdul Jamil from Siddiqui Dispensary in Delhi.

Unani physician

After completing his training at the level of Unani medical practice in the year 1892, Dr. Unani was the chief medical doctor to The Nawab in Rampur. In time, he gained fame in the belief that he could possess the power of God to treat people’s ailments. He is believed to be so skilled in the field of medicine that he can determine the severity of a condition just by looking at his face. If someone visited him to treat a condition in Delhi the city, he would be able to treat patients for no cost However, to take them out of Delhi the doctor would charge 1,000 rupees per day, which was a lot in those days. It demonstrates their capabilities.

He was a major contributor to the creation of the Unani medical system. In this direction, he founded three important institutions in Delhi which included Central College, Hindustani Medicine and Ayurveda, and Unani Tibbia College. These institutions not only researched this medical system but also protected this Unani system from being destroyed. This vital system of medicine was alive throughout the British period. He was close to death due to his efforts.

Hakim Ajmal Khan suggested that the Unani medical system incorporates certain principles from the Western medical system however, in contrast, there is another part of the system which wants to keep the original structure which is the Unani system of medicine.

Ajmal Khan was among the founding members of Jamia Millia Islamia. On November 22, 1922, Ajmal Khan was appointed Chancellor of the Institute and served in this position until his death. He was a major contributor to the development of this organization. It was relocated to Aligarh in the state of Aligarh to Delhi under his guidance. He solicited donations from the general public to bail the institution out of financial difficulties and also put in his funds numerous times to ensure it ran efficiently.

Nationalism

Hakeem Ajmal Khan is a talented person and played a significant role in the nation’s freedom movement nationwide unity, and religious harmony. He began writing for Akmal-ul-Akhbar the Urdu publication founded by his family, following which he switched from the field of medicine to politics. He was also the head of the Muslim party which came together at Shimla in 1906 to submit an oath to the Viceroy of India. He was in attendance at the time that the ‘All India Muslim League formed in Dhaka on the 30th of December, 1906.

He met with Gandhiji in 1919, and later joined with other Muslim leaders such as Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad Maulana Muhammad Ali, and Maulana Shaukat Ali to form the “Khilafat Movement”. His relationship with Gandhiji intensified and anytime Gandhiji required advice on any religious matter, he was able to seek advice from Hakim Sahib.

A feeling of nationalism and patriotic spirit overtook him. The country was more important than religion, for the benefit of the nation, he did not think about comfort and happiness.

Death

Hakeem Ajmal Khan was among the few who have been devoted to helping others in need and charity. Due to heart disease, the great man passed away on the 29th of December, 1927. While Ajmal Khan was a politician only for 9 years, he wrote his name in gold writings in the Indian history of the freedom struggle through his courage, patriotism, and selfless sacrifice.
