KV Kamath is a prominent figure in the Indian banking industry. KV Kamath is the former Managing Director, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of ICICI Bank (the largest private sector bank). KV Kamath was elected to lead the $50 billion New Development Bank (NDB) in June 2015. It is being established by emerging countries Brazil, Russia India, China, South Africa, and China (BRICS).

Kundapur Vaman Kamath is also chairman of Infosys Ltd., the second-largest IT company in the country. His expertise helped modernize the Indian banking industry. He brought about significant changes in India’s banking sector through his ‘universal banking” approach and the proper management of his employees. He is also an independent director at Schlumberger, a Houston-based oil company, and Lupin, an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company.

The first step is life

Kamath was born in Mangalore (Karnataka) on 2nd December 1947 to a Gaur Saraswat Brahmin couple. His father is Vishwanath Kamat. His childhood was spent mainly in Mangalore. His early education was in Kannada-medium schools. He completed PUC at St. Aloysius College after matriculation. He joined the National Institute of Technology Karnataka Suratkal as a Mechanical Engineer after completing Pre-University. He graduated from the National Institute of Technology Suratkal in 1969 and joined the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad to study management.

Carrier

After completing his management education at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, Kamat began his career with ICICI in 1971. He started his career at ICICI as Project Finance. Later, he worked in nearly every department. He also assumed management responsibilities, and this led to the computerization of ICICI’s operations. He made a significant impact on the Indian banking sector by introducing computerization to ICICI.

Kamat moved to Manila (Philippines) in 1988 and worked in the bank’s Private Sector division. He worked for the Asian Development Bank on various financial projects in Vietnam, China, India, and the Philippines. As the representative of the Asian Development Bank, he has been a member of several boards.

Kamath was appointed Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of ICICI in 1996. He expanded the services of the group to retail customers. Under his leadership, ICICI purchased several ‘nonbanking financial companies between 1996 and 1998. This opened the door to the creation of ‘ICICI Bank.

In May 2011, he was elected the non-executive chairman at Infosys (India’s second-largest exporter of software).

Kamat is also a member of the Governing Council for several educational institutions. These include the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, the Indian School of Business, and the National Institute of Bank Management. He is also Chairman of the Governing Board of the Indian Institute of Management, Indore.

Kamat is also a member of the National Committee of the Confederation of Indian Industry.

KV Kamath was named the head of the $50-billion New Development Bank (NDB), which will be formed by emerging countries like South Africa, Brazil, India, China, China, and India (BRICS) in June 2015.

Forbes Asia named him the “Businessman of the Year”.

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan award by the Government of India in 2008.
