Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, also known as M. Visvesvaraya, was an engineer and politician. He was a key player in the building of modern India. In 1955, he was awarded the highest honor in India, the ‘Bharat Ratna’. This was in recognition of his contributions to the construction of India. Engineer’s Day is India’s celebration of his birthday. The British Government awarded him the ‘Knight Commander in the British Indian Empire’ (KCIE) for his services to the people. As Chief Engineer and Chief Designer of the flood defense system in Hyderabad, he played an important role in the construction of the Krishna Sagar Dam at Mysore.

The first step is life

Mokshagundam Vivesvaraya was a Brahmin child born in Chikkaballapur, Kolar district on 15 September 1960. His father’s name Srinivasa Shastri is his mother’s Venkachamma. His ancestors came from Mokshagundam, Andhra Pradesh. Srinivasa Shastri, his father, was a Sanskrit scholar as well as an Ayurvedic doctor. Visvesvaraya, who was twelve years old, lost his father. His primary education was in his hometown’s primary school.


He then joined Central College in Bangalore. Tuition was paid here because of a lack of funds. He passed the BA exam in 1881, and then he studied engineering at Poona Science College with the support of the Mysore Government. He was able to pass the FCE and LCE exams in 1883 and was appointed Assistant Engineer at Nashik by the Government of Maharashtra.

He studied engineering and got a job at the PWD department in Mumbai. He designed and implemented complex irrigation systems in Deccan. He was able to achieve many successes despite the limited resources and use of advanced technology. These include Bhadravati Iron and Steel Works and Bhadravati Dam. These achievements were possible because of the efforts of MV.

He was 32 years old when he worked in the Sukkur (Sindh), Municipal Corporation.

To improve irrigation, the British government established a committee. This committee appointed him as a member. He invented a new block system to do this. He created steel gates to stop water flowing from the dam. This system was widely praised and is still in use today.

He also intended to dam the waters from Musa and Isa rivers. In 1909, he was named Chief Engineer of Mysore State.

He was also concerned with basic issues like poverty, illiteracy, and unemployment. In Mysore state. To solve these problems, it is recommended to hold an “Economic Conference”. This Krishna Raja Sagar Dam in Mysore was constructed after this. Engineers created mortar that was stronger than cement, as cement wasn’t available in this country at the time.

Diwan of Mysore

In 1912, the Maharaja was proud to name him Diwan of Mysore in recognition of his contributions to the state. He was the Diwan of Mysore and greatly contributed to the industrial and educational development of the state. His efforts led to the creation of many new industries in the state. They include the Sandalwood Oil Factory and Soap Factory as well as Metal Factory and Chrome Tanning Factory. The Bhadravati Iron and Steel Works is a notable example of the many factories that he founded. Sir M Visvesvaraya, Diwan of Mysore, voluntarily retired in 1918.

Active even after retirement. In 1955, the Government of India presented him with the ‘Bharat Ratna’ in recognition of his valuable services to the country. The Government of India issued a postal bill in Sir M Visvesvaraya’s honor on his 100th birthday.

Visvesvaraya, 101 years old, died on April 14, 1962.
