Motilal Nehru was an eminent freedom fighter. He was considered to be one of the most brilliant lawyers in India before the independence of the country. He played a significant role during his time in Congress as well as being twice elected Congress President. He is also referred to as being the father of Jawaharlal Nehru, the very first premier of India. He was affectionately referred to as Pandit Motilal Nehru.

 

The first step in life.

Motilal Nehru was born on the 6th of May 1861 in Delhi to a Kashmiri Brahmin family. The father of Motilal was Gangadhar and his mother was Jiva Rani. Motilal Nehru’s father passed away before when Motilal became a father. Motilal Nehru was raised with his older brother Nandlal who was an advocate general in Allahabad.

Motilal Nehru was among the first generation of young people in India to receive a “Western-style college education. He attended Muir College, Agra, however, in the last year of his B.A. He failed the examination. He decided to enter the legal profession and sat for the bar exam. Motilal Nehru passed the legal exam and began working as an attorney within Kanpur in 1883.

Motilal Nehru was born in Allahabad and established himself in the field of the most renowned lawyers in the nation. He earned lakhs each month and lived happily. He purchased a huge home located in Civil Lines, Allahabad. He traveled to Europe several times and adopted the western way of life. He reached the top of his professional career when he was in 1909 when he was accepted into the Privy Council of Great Britain.

 

In the year 1910, Motilal contested and won the elections to the United Provinces Legislative Assembly. The advent of Mahatma Gandhi into Indian politics changed the entire political landscape for Motilal Nehru. His involvement in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 was a blow to his belief in British rule, and he decided to join the struggle for freedom. The British government set up a commission to study the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

 

Congress was against this and established the committee of inquiry. Mahatma Gandhi Motilal Nehru as well as Chittaranjan Das were among the members of this committee. He renounced his pledge that he would follow Gandhiji as a member of his Non-Cooperation Movement. He took off his lavish life, western attire as well as other things, and began wearing Khadi.

Motilal Nehru won the election to the presidency in Congress in 1919 and 1929. He established his party, the Swaraj Party with his compatriot Chittaranjan Das. Motilal Nehru was the first secretary, and later the president of the Swaraj Party. Nehru was the head of opposition within the legislature of the central government and was strongly opposed to the policies of the government.

In 1927, when the Simon Commission was appointed 1927, Motilal Nehru was asked to write a constitution for an independent India. He suggested that he grant the status of Dominion to India within the Constitution written by his. The radical section of the Congress that was headed by Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhash Chandra Bose, fought against Dominion status and demanded full independence.

Motilal Nehru was imprisoned in 1930 within the context of the civil disobedience protest movement. Due to his declining health his condition, he was released in 1931. Motilal Nehru passed away on 6 Februar 1931 at Lucknow.
