Vaikom Sree Mahadeva Temple
This temple is part of a formidable trio, which also includes Ettumanoor Shiva Temple and Kaduthuruthy Thaaliyil Mahadeva. Many believe the Shiva Linga is from the Treta Yoga. This temple is the oldest in Kerala and has not been violated by pooja since its inception.
History:
Legend has it that Ravana obtained the Saiva Vidya Upadesam from Malyavan (Ravana’s great-grandfather). Khara, an asura, was a great devotee of Lord Shiva and traveled to Chidambaram to perform extreme penance to attain moksha. His penance was so well received by Lord Shiva. He granted him all the boons that he asked for and gave him three huge Shiva Lingas.
Khara was heading south from Kailash carrying the three Lingas in both his right and left hands. Khara carried the Lingas in his right hand, his left hand, and his neck. He was tired and laid the Lingas to rest.
When he attempted to grab them, the Lingas refused to move. Khara gave the Lingas to Maharshi Viaghrapada who was with him and asked the sage for protection and worship.
