Kanshiram was an Indian politician and social reformer. He worked for the political integration and upliftment of the Untouchables and Dalits throughout his life. He prepared a platform for the downtrodden sections of the society to speak their minds and fight for their rights. To do this he adopted several means, but the most important step of them all was the establishment of the Bahujan Samaj Party. Kanshiram devoted his entire life to the upliftment of the people of the backward classes and to give them a strong and united voice. He remained celibate throughout his life and devoted his entire life to fighting and empowering the underprivileged people.
Life is the first step
Kansheeram was born on 15 March 1934 in Rorapur, Punjab into a Raidasi Sikh family. This is a community that left their religion and embraced Sikhism. Even though Kanshiram’s father had little education, he made sure that all his children got higher education. Kanshiram has two brothers and four sisters. Kanshiram is the eldest and educated among the siblings. He studied B.Sc. After graduation in 1958, Kanshiram joined the Defense Production Department in Poona as an Assistant Scientist.
In 1965 Dr. Ambedkar fought against the cancellation of a public holiday on his birth anniversary. After this incident, he decided to fight for the suffering society. He studied the entire caste system and the writings of Dr. BR Ambedkar in depth and worked immensely for the upliftment of Dalits. Finally, in 1971, he quit his job and founded the Employees Welfare Association of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Castes and Minorities with a colleague.
The organization is registered at the office of the Charity Officer, Poona. Although this organization was formed to prevent exploitation of workers from the affected community and for effective redressal, the main objective of this organization is to create awareness among the people and make them aware of the caste system. Gradually, more and more people joined this organization due to which it became very successful. In 1973, Kanshiram along with his colleagues founded BAMCEF (Backward and Minority Communities Employees Federation), whose first functional office opened in 1976 in Delhi. The motto of this organization is Educate, Organize and Agitate. This organization did the fundamental work of making Ambedkar’s thoughts and beliefs accessible to the public. After this, Kanshiram strengthened his expansion system and made people aware of the caste system, its production in India and the ideas of Ambedkar. Wherever he went, he spread his word and got the support of people on a large scale.
In 1980, a walk called ‘Ambedkar Mela’ was started to tell the life of Ambedkar and his thoughts through pictures and stories. In 1984, Kanshiram founded Dalit Shoshit Samaj Sangharsh Samiti parallel to BAMCEF. The committee was formed to protect activists who were attacked for spreading awareness about the caste system. Although this organization is not registered, it is a political organization. In 1984, Kanshiram founded a political party called the Bahujan Samaj Party. In 1986, he transformed from a social worker to a political leader, saying that he would not work in any organization other than the Bahujan Samaj Party. Through party meetings and his speeches, Kanshiram said that if the governments promised to do something, they should also fulfill them, otherwise they have to admit that they do not have the power to fulfill the promises.
Contribution to politics
Through his social and political activities, Kanshiram gave the people of the lower classes a voice that no one expected. The Bahujan Samaj Party provided an effective voice to the lower caste people of Uttar Pradesh and other northern states like Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.
Kansheeram has problems with diabetes and high blood pressure. He also had a heart attack in 1994. He suffered a brain attack in 2003 due to a blood clot in a cerebral vein. He left public life after 2004 due to ill health. He was bedridden for almost two years and died of a heart attack on 9 October 2006. As per his last wish, he was cremated according to Buddhist rites.
An important legacy of Kanshiram is the political party he founded – the Bahujan Samaj Party. Some awards are also given in his honour. These awards include Kanshi Ram International Sports Awards (10 lakhs), Kanshi Ram Kala Ratna Awards (5 lakhs) and Kanshi Ram Bhasha Ratna Samman (2.5 lakhs). A district in Uttar Pradesh is named Kanshiram Nagar. The district was named on 15 April 2008.
