Vaman Srinivas Kudwa as well V.S. Kudwa, Founder Director of Syndicate Bank. Kudwa was among the founding directors of Syndicate Bank, which started as Canara Industrial and Banking Syndicate Limited. The bank was founded by him with an initial capital amount of Rs.8000 and also the other founders included Upendra Anant Pai as well as TMA.

In 1964, the name changed and became Syndicate Bank and the bank expanded its operations to other areas of India as well as overseas. Apart from establishing the institution, Vaman Srinivaskudwa was involved in other social service initiatives. The name he is known for includes “Karmayogi in Mangalore in the Mangalore region and Dakshina Kannada region.

Kudwa was born in 1899 to the traditional and conservative Gauda Saraswat Brahmin family from Mulki, Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. He was raised in a normal and safe environment. He completed his elementary education in Mulki and then high education in Udupi. His father Srinivas Rajachandra Kudwa is the owner of a handloom business. In 1908, after the family moved to Udupi Srinivas Ramachandra KUDWA started a hardware shop.

He was a regular participant in debate competitions at the school. He was well-versed in English as well as Kannada languages. Kudwa finished his intermediate at Mangalore Government College in 1918. He then moved to Mumbai to pursue mechanical engineering studies at Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute (VJTI). While he was top of the class for three consecutive years, Gandhi joined the non-cooperation movement and quit his studies.

Between 1922 and 1926, Kudwa established his engineering facility in Udupi and later moved to Mangalore 1926. The then Director-General of Canara Public Conveyance Company Limited (CPC Company Limited) V.S. Kamath became a workshop supervisor upon the invitation of his boss. Following the death of Kamat in the year 1932, Kamat was appointed director general of the business.

He was named the Managing Director in 1938 and was in the position until 1966. In his time, the firm reached new heights in its achievement and witnessed a massive increase in revenue. It also earned its not only fame and recognition across the nation. At this time Kudwa recognized the need for additional industries to create employment.

In this regard, the founder of the company was named the ‘The Canara Sales Corporation Limited’ and The Canara Motor and General Insurance Company Limited (1941). In addition, the company was established, but he also created ‘The Canara Workshop Limited in 1943. The workshop was the place where he started manufacturing leaf springs for automobiles.

He began selling the leaf springs under the name Canara Leaf Springs. With the increase in the need for these springs in North India, he set up a new plant at Nagpur however, he was forced to shut it in the 60s. The materials for the production of leaves cheeks came from around the world. Kudwa thought of setting up the construction of a small steel plant to make the necessary steel. This led to a mini-steel plant. Following this, in 1947 Kudwa created ‘TheCanara Tire and Rubber Works Limited’.

In his time as a student, Kudwa was very interested in journalism. He began writing his first Kannada Weekly “Satyagrahi” in 1922. In 1923, he was Editor of the Kannada weekly “Swadeshabhimani” and was involved in the work until 1924. In addition to various other industries, Kudwa was the founder of ‘The Newspaper Publishers Private Limited in 1941, which commenced the publication of the Kannada newspaper “Navabharat”. Kudwa earned a lot of admiration in the field of Kannada journalism when he was the editor of this newspaper.

As an active social leader

With TMA Pai and Upendra Anant Pai, Kudwa was the founder of them the Canara Industrial and Banking Syndicate Limited (now Syndicate Bank) in Mangalore in 1925. The bank is considered to be one of the most storied and most prestigious commercial banks within India The bank was declared a national on July 19, 1969, by the Government of India. Kudwa was elected as president of the Canara Chambers of Commerce and Industry in 1948.

 

He remained president for three years. He played an integral role in the development of the airport and port in Mangalore. He established the Canara Foundation, to provide student loans for technical education in foreign. In 1960, he created the ‘Karnataka Regional Engineering College’ along with U Srinivas Mallya, now named the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Suratkal.

Rotary Club

Kudwa is also acknowledged for founding the very first Rotary club in Mangalore. He is the club’s founding president. Aside from that He is also the chairman of a variety of other organizations and companies. SK Development and Welfare Board, Small Scale Industries Association, and SK Village Industries Association are the most prominent among them.

In his life, Kudwa made many trips to other countries. He’s been throughout his native Middle East, Europe, the United States, and Japan.

Personal life

Kudwa married V.S. Kamath’s daughter Shanta was born in 1928. The family has six sons and a daughter. Vaman Srinivas Kudwa passed away on June 30, 1967, at the age of 68.
