It was believed that the water would wash away all their sins. It is also called Papanasam Falls. Papanasam, in the local language, means to eliminate all sins.
These beautiful waterfalls are known for their unique medicinal and herbal properties. These waters are so soothing that they feel like massage oil.
Papanasam Waterfalls Myth
Agasthiyar Falls has a religious significance that is very important in this region. According to Hindu mythology, Agastya is believed to have been the source of the name Agastya. I prayed for the divine union of Lord Shiva, and Goddess Parvati.
Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva, was pleased with Agastya’s devotion and made Papansanathar his home. He named the nearby waterfall Agastya Falls.
Another legend states that Indra the king of all gods, killed a demon called Data in order to attain greater power.
He is the son of Shukracharya and the guru of Dvasta Asuras. He wants to take over the gods. It was said that Indra committed the error of Brahmatti (the sin of killing a Brahmin).
Indra wandered around a lot to pay the price for his sin. Indra entered Papanasam after the guidance of Brihaspati. Papanasam then forgave him. The place was renamed Papanasam.

Geography
The water from the Papanasam Falls flows towards the river that leads to the Papanasam Hydroelectric Project in the Western Ghats of India.
It eventually reaches the Papanasam Dam’s catchment area. This waterfall is located very near the Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in Calcutta.
This is where most animals can be found. It is important that rain falls.
It gets most of its water between October and December. It receives most of its water during the southwest monsoon and northeast monsoon, which are both from May to September each year. It is also close to the Papanasam Dam, so Agustiar Falls doesn’t dry up and flows year-round.

The Biosphere Reserve was well connected to the rest of the country by roads. From Papanasam Falls, which is located 20 kilometers from the Biosphere Reserve, you can either take a bus or a taxi.
