Early Life and Education:

Kesab Chandra Gogoi was born on 29 September 1925 into a Tai-Ahom family. He hailed from Dibrugarh, Assam. After completing his early education, Gogoi pursued a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree and subsequently obtained an LLB degree. He also practiced as an advocate in the Gauhati High Court and the Dibrugarh district court. Besides his legal career, Gogoi was actively involved in social work, showcasing his commitment to public service.

Political Career:

Gogoi’s political journey began in 1978 when he was elected as a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Dibrugarh constituency, representing the Janata Party. Soon after his election, he became a minister in the Golap Borbora and Jogendra Nath Hazarika cabinets. In 1980, Gogoi joined the Indian National Congress and served as the Minister of Finance, Power, Steel and Mines, and Parliamentary Affairs in the Anwara Taimur cabinet.

Chief Ministership and Contributions:

On 13 January 1982, Kesab Chandra Gogoi assumed the role of Chief Minister of Assam, leading the state government for a brief period. During his tenure, he prioritized the resolution of the foreigners’ issue and focused on maintaining law and order in the state. Gogoi emphasized the implementation of the National Rural Employment Scheme and supported the 20-point programs launched by Indira Gandhi, showcasing his commitment to uplifting the rural population and addressing socio-economic challenges.

Despite his initial enthusiasm and vision, Gogoi’s tenure as Chief Minister faced challenges. A motion of no confidence was moved against his ministry on 17 March 1982, and Gogoi eventually resigned. Gogoi held various ministerial positions, including that of the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister in the Hiteswar Saikia cabinet from 1983 to 1985. However, in 1992, he was removed from the cabinet for alleged anti-party activities.

Personal Life and Legacy:

Kesab Chandra Gogoi was married to Shanti Gogoi in 1951, and they had five children. His son Anjan Gogoi served as an Air Marshal in the Indian Air Force, while his son Ranjan Gogoi went on to become the 46th Chief Justice of India. Gogoi’s contributions to Assam’s political and social spheres continue to inspire future generations.

Death:

Kesab Chandra Gogoi passed away on 5 August 1998 in Dibrugarh at the age of 72, leaving behind a rich legacy of public service and political leadership. His wife, Shanti Gogoi, who played a vital role in Assam politics, passed away on 9 April 2021.
