He hailed from a political family, with his father, Kamaleshwar Gogoi, being a member of the Indian National Congress (INC). Tarun Gogoi completed his education in Jorhat and later pursued his higher studies at the prestigious J.B. College and Gauhati University.

His political journey began in the early 1960s when he joined the INC’s youth wing, the Indian Youth Congress.
