Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (22 May 1859 7 July 1930) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (22 May – 7 July 1930) Scottish writer, doctor, and spiritualist, most famous for the Sherlock Holmes stories.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Picardy Place in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1859. While at school, he developed an interest in storytelling in the dormitories following lights. He hoped to be an established author, especially in the genre of historical fiction. From 1876 until 1881, he pursued a degree in Medicine at the University of Edinburgh; he was a doctor, and later established medical practices in Plymouth and then Portsmouth.
After the death of his father, the responsibility of supporting an entire family fell upon Arthur Conan Doyle. To supplement his earnings, he started writing stories in the form of short tales. The first of his stories is “A Research in Scarlet published in the Beeton’s Christmas Annual 1887 (featuring the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes. The story resulted in a subsequent contract to write more Sherlock Holmes stories for Strand magazine. In these first stories, he conceived Sherlock Holmes as a character. Sherlock Holmes. The character attracted the attention of the public who read about him and soon he become one of the most loved fictional characters. Sherlock Holmes always had an element of mystery, his sharpest intellect, and his amazing ability to see.

Sherlock Holmes also had his share of human flaws like smoking and drug dependence. Holmes’s companion, the wise Watson, a trustworthy Watson proved to be the perfect alternative to the accomplished Sherlock Holmes’s technical genius. Holmes.
The popularity of Sherlock Holmes allowed Conan Doyle to retire from his medical practice and become a full-time author. However, it wasn’t the cult Sherlock Holmes stories that inspired Conan Doyle the most. He was more attracted to writing historical novels that were serious and were soon an acclaimed author in this genre. But, his historical fiction didn’t earn him the same amount of money or recognition as the fame of his Sherlock Holmes stories did.
After a time, Doyle became increasingly frustrated with the fascination of the public with Holmes and the Holmes stories, to the point where he had grown tired of the tales. So, he decided to end his involvement with Holmes in 1893. He did this by having Holmes plunge into a ravine along with his arch-rival Professor Moriarty. Holmes believed that this would allow him space to work on his “serious novels’. But to his dismay and frustration, he was unable to overcome his image as the author of Holmes. It was not common for the general public to compare Conan Doyle with Sherlock Holmes which irritated Holmes.
In the year 1900, Conan Doyle served in an in-field hospital during the Boer war. Conan Doyle also published the pamphlet The Boer War in South Africa: Its Cause and Conduct which attempted to defend British military actions in the controversial Boer war. In recognition of his service during the war, he received a knighthood however, his reputation as the author of Sherlock Holmes was an element.
In 1906 his first wife, Louisa Hawkins, died after a long struggle with Tuberculosis. It was a devastating loss for Conan Doyle who had moved to Switzerland to boost her health.
After being engaged to his first bride, Denise Steward a year later the couple was again looking for money to pay for a new home for the family. In the end, Doyle turned to his ever-profitable Holmes to secure a lucrative agreement in exchange with an American publisher to publish more Holmes stories. So, Holmes was resurrected, Conan Doyle cleverly wrote that Holmes was not dead in the fall, but had cleverly managed to escape Moriarty and went to hide from his foes.

Conan Doyle’s most well-known character was one who was a man with a great intellect and a love of science It was odd the fact that Conan Doyle was to become extremely interested in the emerging spiritualist religion. The main focus of spiritualism is the contact with relatives who had died through séances. Over the years, Conan Doyle had toyed with the idea however, the tragic events during the First World War (where he lost a son and brother) transformed his perspective towards one of a staunch religious believer. Conan Doyle became one of the main proponents and the public face of spiritualism. Conan Doyle felt that this evidence of eternal life could provide a new impetus to faith.

The popularity in creation of Doyle’s Holmes led him to pursue various areas of interest. Along with his research into the spirituality of religion, Conan Doyle found time to defend against miscarriages of justice in cases like the George Edalji case.

Something can be achieved by putting one’s entire weight into the pan of tolerance, breadth kindness as well as temperance, peace, and kindness to the human and beast. We’re not all able to strike large blows, and even little children are worth something.”
