Lord Sri Rama established Shiva Lingam here to redeem the sin of murdering Ravana the Brahmin. He chose Keesaragutta The stunning valley with its hills and lush greenery.

Rama requested Hanuman to take the Shiva Lingam to Varanasi to be installed there. Hanuman arrived late to collect his Shiva Lingams.

Lord Shiva showed up at Sri Rama and offered a Shiva Lingam to be installed as the Special hour approached. The Shiva Lingam in this instance can be described as Swayambhu Lingam along with Ramalingeshwara Swamy, as Sri Rama had inaugurated the Lingam.

Hanuman has returned to Varanasi in the form of 101 Lingams ready for choice. He was angry after seeing that the Shiva Lingam set up and set idols all over the region. There are many Lingams in the vicinity of the temple.

To soothe Hanuman, Sri Rama ordered that priority be granted to him in prayers at the temple. Sri Rama stated that the hill bears his name Kesarigiri since Hanuman was the child of Kesari and is currently Keesaragutta within Keesara. Since then the rituals have been based on the direction of Sri Rama.
